I'd join in two new wires about 3" back from the Ford plug and fit the new connectors to them leaving the ford connector in place so you can quickly revert back to standard when you sell the car

Correct me if I'm wrong.... but I believe you can cut the wire just under the standard Ford connectors and use spade connectors to connect to the new speakers. This is what I did in my old Fiesta (MK4). However, I am yet to change the speakers in my ST.

I really wouldn't bother with a wire harness change - money for nothing. I'd do as Dave said - the speaker terminals should be standard size crimp ones you can pick up from any car audio shop or you could even solder the wire to them them for nothing
If you are going to solder it make sure you dont get the terminals too hot as the wire from the back side to voice coil might be only lightly soldered on! (A voice of a past screw up!)
*edit for awful spelling*

Thanks dude, I'll do that. I drove to Halfords to be met with blank stares (I even took the photo with me on my Ipod), he told me to go to a shop called Uplands (car audio specialists), went there, drove around the block twice to park, they were anything but car audio specialists ("urr we have some radios and speakers..."), drove back out, noticed 3 brand spanking new Aston Martins being loaded onto a truck (there's an Aston garage next door), almost crashed from gawking at them, came home, tried the local ricer car shop, he wanted £3 for those little rubber grip things, gave up, it rained.
Phew.

The worst bit is how short the cables are!
