I had a real issue. I put down poisen bait by the kilo and the buggers all it all away every night. I couldn't work out how a little mouse could 1 eat some much, and 2, not die from the quanity of poison consumed. A week later, when I was cleaning the living room, I lifted the cushions on my sofa to find the little buggers were stockpiling it in my sofa ready for winter.
So, plan b.... out with the traps. I caught 6 in the first night before I gave up because the constant snapping kept me awake. After about a week I think I was starting to make a real dent in the population and then nothing for ages..... had I finished them off.... "snap.... flap flap flap flap... I caught a baby one by its right fore leg. I didn't have the heart to kill it directly but knew that leaving it outside was signing its death warrent..... so I manned up and flushed him down the toilet... out of sight, out of mind
