Transverse is front wheel drive. Gearbox mounted to the side
In line or longitudinal is RWD. Gearbox mounted to the rear

The "X" stands for transverse,
As there was the MT-75 (Sierra, Granada, Transit RWD) and the MTX-75 for FWD applications. (Escort RS2000 & Diesel etc etc)

I was under the impression that it stood for "M" Manual "T" Tranmission "X" Transverse mounted "7" 700nm Torque capability "5" 5 forward gears

But I could be wrong
