Are the faster cars in real life, faster?

Seems a bit unfair to me that you can't drive the car you want in TT to get a good lap. I can't get the williams under 29, I can't get the renault under 28 but I go out in the red bull and I get in to the 26s with no bother. Or maybe it's a psychological thing.
