I though people starting destroying gear boxes when they had the lsd fitted because of the plastic case bearings and they couldn't take the power

This is true, standard bearings are plastic cased. Normally people will upgrade to a steel caged item when fitting an LSD, or rebuilding a box.
They should fit them, that is......
