I think it's normal. When I had grooved discs they made sort of a whooshing noise. They were EBC discs and yellowstuff pads. I assumed it was the sound of the grooves going across the pads.

They do work well but I have gone back to plain discs now after I first had a stone stuck in them and then after a few years wear deposits fused into the grooves causing brake rudder.
