Hi there wondering if anyone can help.

I've replace the 1.1 engine on my 96'fiesta with one from an earlier model, and I cant get the motor to start, even though it wants to and seems so close to firing, saying that it ran for about 30 seconds before after I initially put the engine in.

There are diffrences between the two engines.

the engine set up in my car has an automatic choke, a return line back to the petrol tank, generally the carb looked like spagetti junction, and the fuel pump is in the petrol tank.

The replacement engine of an earlier model has an simple (but better in my opinion) weber carb with a manual choke, the petrol pump attached to the side of the engine block running of the engine mechanically.

I've tried all combinations of new engine new carb, new engine old carb and still its so close to firing up but nots having any of it.

It seems more likely to fire with the original carb with automatic choke from my old engine.

Is the any major difference between the older and newer engines timing etc.

Occasionally I'm getting blow back from the engine, I'm getting the feeling too much fuel is being delivered to the engine.

All the plugs are delivering a spark.

I'm begining to think the carb with the Automatic engine is incompatible with the engine with the manual choke.

anyone experienced this or have any ideas?

The earlier engine is pre catalyst and probably pre immobiliser.

The original engine has a CFi unit at 96 with EECIV engine ecu running it.
The reason it won't run is because the brain is for the 96 model. I'ts probably trying to talk to the coil pack and brain from the donor vehicle.

The whole ignition system, inlet/fuel intake & exhaust sytem from your original engine need to be bolted to the new engine so that the brain can make it work.


You won't pass MOT emmissions with no cat and the carb fitted on a 96 model car.

I thought you'd already got a relpacement engine, it's just that it's older spec that's the problem.

You don't need another engine, they are exactly the same.

What you need is all the bolt on parts from your old engine to make it run with the spec of your car.
