both rear brakes not working help

Went out this morning and realised straight away my brakes not working fully, felt to be 50%, spongy and no bite on the discs. Completed my 15 mile journey as had enough to drive safely. Stopped and checked both rear discs, both were still red rusty and obviously both calipers had not applied whatsoever, the fronts were working and clean. My brother said drive around the block and apply brakes while driving and apply them on/off hard, this seemed to get them slowly working as each time I stopped he looked at discs and they were cleaning up slowly. Left my brothers and continued to aply brakes on way home and they got better. Got home safely but still think they are not 100%. Last week was very icy all week here and my journey to work did not require much braking on the icy roads and car is not garaged so they didn't get much of a workout.
So have the calipers stuck (usually stick on in my experience) in the off position BUT why both, is there one cable pulling both rear that has a problem ? My Ford Garage is not open now until middle of next week I will be taking it there. Not good is it for a £13,500 car June 07 !

thanks, I am on a slight slope so need handbrake on, I also put it in 1st, used to put it in reverse but next day gear stick was usually stuck (car must have moved slightly) and needed to clutch and start car up to get it out of gear.

Common problem with these calipers I'm afraid.
I lubricate the mechanism every month.
The calipers are well old, First used on Sierra XR4x4 in 1985.

 that a while back have ford didn't rethink the design during all this year

what mechanism ? if thats the case why were both not applying surely too much of a coincidene that both stopped, handbrake works which means rear calipers are applying but foot brake is not operating them so surely it is a fluid or fluid pipe issue in that the fluid is not getting to them ?
I don't know much about mechanics of cars just thinking logically and I defer to any of you better informed people.

when I did have air bubble in my brake fluid the brake pedal was felling spongy and had to pump the brake pedal to slow down. do u have the same?

If it was a hydraulic fault then surely the front brakes wouldn't work as well?
Or at least one side?
By mechanism I mean the handbrake actuators on the caliper.
They are open to the elements and yours have obviously got a good coating of salt and seized open.
The mechanism on these calipers also control the adjustment of the caliper.
Try lubricating the mechanism and it should be OK.
Does the Handbrake work? If it does then it's the rear brake limiter valve on the rear axle that's gone.

Yes when problem occured the brakes did feel spongy but after doing some hard breaking and pumping the calipers started to work.
Today - handbrake works fine, took car out brakes seemed back to normal, did some hard breaking and left foot braking under power and all seems fine. So maybe the limiter as you say. I will let Ford have a look and see what they say/do later in week and post on here, thanks all, safe driving and have a jolly xmas.

Ford tested brakes today, found all be working fully and no faults could be found.

went out tonight, both rear discs not working, there is no way I could do an emergency stop. Will be taking back to garage tommorrow - what is wrong ? Has anybody had this problem, if not then seems I need new calipers and or that central valve thingy all replacing. Tonight was just heavy rain (freezing last time it happended)so must be a damp/cold issue getting in somewhere

if its just you in the car the rear brakes will hardly work
