Okay, so it's rather early at the moment to judge what kind of car this is going to be, but as a fan of the current ST, I must say I'm very excited at the prospect of the new Fiesta sport. The descriptions of the styling and quality of manufacture sound excellent and should certainly put Vauxhall in its place when it comes out.
What with the twin exhausts and the 1.6 turbo engine (which will knock out more power than the current 2.0 litre ST) count me in!

Who else is thinking of buying one of these beauties?

I'm not a big fan of the new ford design. Yes the current fiesta shape has been around for a while now but i prefer the older focus to the new one aswell.
I'm not going to be placing an order but then again i know what my next fast ford is going to be.

As is nature, when something new comes along, things start to look dated. Personally, I think the current Fiesta ST still looks like a stunning car. I still can't take my eyes off it and I've had it nearly a year now. I love it.

The only thing that disappoints me about the car is the interior. The seats are very nice, but that, in my opinion, is where it ends. The dash looks like it was designed by Noddy (what the hell is up with that stupid shelf above the glove compartment), I dislike the layout of the centre console and the CD player, and why Ford didn't design the hand-brake with a nice leather gaiter I will never know (I've put a leather gaiter on the gear stick).

The new ST appeals to me for three very good reasons: The look, the power, and the quality of manufacture. I can't wait*

*I realise that we still only have an idea of how this car is going to be, so my opinion at the moment is just based upon what industry insiders have stated.

I personally think it looks quite good, and although it's only sketchy rumours at the minute as to what it will be like - in terms of overall looks and particularly with specification - then, although I personally won't be getting one, I'm confident that anyone that does will love it.

That's not to say I'm running down the current one, far from it, I think it's an excellent car.

One thing to remember is that back in 2002 many people initially hated the look of the mk6 (ie. the pre-facelift version of the current Fiesta). I think that was simply because, even though it was still built on the same base as Fiesta's had done since the mk3 way back in 1989, in terms of how it looked it was quite a radical departure from what had gone before ie. it looked like a baby Focus. Where as previous new Fiesta's throughout the 90s had simply been new styling changes to the same basic shape. Once people got used to it then most liked it. Hopefully the new Fiesta/Verve will grow on people.

To be fair to the new ST it's still early days yet. The standard Fiesta/Verve isn't even out yet, so hold horses on slagging the design off just yet!

Also, the image posted above from Auto Express is just an early concept photograph that has been finished off in a computer, so I'm pretty sure the car, when finally finished, will look...smart...very smart.

I trust Ford. I think they have taken a long look at the current Fiesta ST and seen its problems (the interior design being the biggest) and will build upon this in order to compete and beat the current wave of super-minis.

It seems to be overstyled, like the Honda Civil and the Corsa. Looks a million dollars for six months then looks dated.

Tbh I never really liked the current Civic from the start, especially the way the spoiler looks like it's randomly stuck on where it is.

Me too...

I don't like the basic corsa... only the VXR... but that will stay popular for years to come... just like most top end sporty models... they always stay looking nice imo.

uumm not sure on the new shape yet. I tend to keep my cars and get my moneys worth, had my last one an RS1800 for about 7 years, before that a mint diamond white XR2 for 10 years. I certainly fancy the 165bhp tuning package or maybe order another with the full 185bhp and then that would turn the ST into the car I have always wanted. Dislikes, not enough length in boot when seats down (I put my bike in it) the dash could be better but (different from the rest of range) but with silver bezzle looks fine and neat, I don't like the headlamp levelling switch being out of eyeshot and easy touch neither - bonkers. It's a tricky one this-however a current ST with the tuning package could become rare-ish and hold some value-a bit like my RS1800 of which only 900 and something were ever made. (For those of you who don't know this car, it was a tuned version of the XR2i a bit like what they are doing again now.

The Rs Turbo was a 1.6 Turbo and the 1800 was a 1.8 N/A

The Turbo is always the more popular car due to the availability of improving its performance easier and also it has the bonnet vents etc.

The 1800 is a rare car now... don't see many of them at shows now.

Yup yup thats right... there is like 0.1s econd difference 0-60 with them. I actually think the turbo was quicker if i remember correctly.

You've got to remember that that was the time when insurance groups started to change - the higher groups were coming in and insurers were running scared of insuring hot hatches. That will have been why Ford will have made it a bit less powerful to keep it more insurable. It was for the same reasons that around this time the XR2i was dropped and replaced with the more "insurance frendly" Si.

I wonder how the power increase in the new ST (due in 2009) is going to affect the popularity (and, indeed - sales) of the car (with younger drivers)? In terms of insurance I'm not worried because by the time it comes out I'll be over 26 years old and will have been driving for a long time, but it seems to me that the current ST (while powerful for its size and by no means cheap) is aimed more at a younger market.

The new ST is kind of blurring more into the upmarket performance arena and will probably no longer be branded as a car for "yoofs". It looks like a more maturely styled car than the current ST.

the RS was slower maybe because it was heavier as well and have a bit less power

Also, the RS used the Zetec engine whereas the RSturbo and XR2i's had the noisyer outgoing CVH, the CVH was a good engine if you really looked after hit. When the RSturbo was dropped only the XR2i was available in CVH or later 105bhp Zetec, the RS1800 had the tuned 130bhp zetec, bigger throttle body too.
Nice pic in Ash Black like mine, memories.............I'll try and post a pic of mine on here sometime soon.

Nah must admit I prefer the current shape of fiesta St, like mentioned above it has been around for a wile now, but it works! as for the engine however a 1.6 turbo would certanly put a smile on my face. However the current 2.0 is more than enough power for me. therefore i will not bwing buying the new one.

Have any of you guys seen the photos (posted in another topic I think was titled "Ford have finally decided on a name") from the Geneva motor show? I must say I am very underwhelmed with the new Fiesta. It looks nice on the outside (just nice, not stunning) but the interior is terrible. Far too fussy for such a small car.

It's difficult to judge what kind of upgrades the car will have when it is upgraded into the ST. I was excited about the new Fiesta, but after those pics I don't think I shall bother buying one.

I might make a leap to either a Focus ST, or a Focus RS sometime in the future.

Indeed it will be but... the ST is not expected before spring next year. Ford have only said so far that it will be launched "soon" after the other models, whatever soon means.

Maybe the new Ka ST will be more fun - especially if they provide the 155hp upgrade that the fiat 500 is getting..

I know they originally said that the Ka ST would only be around 120bhp, in order to avoid stealing sales from the next Fiesta ST. But given that that's now expected to be 190bhp, more than was first thought, then the Ka may be end up being more than 120 in the end.

I think it looks quite nice. It's good that they've managed to bring it up-to-date, but without losing the style of the original. It was always going to be hard for them to change it without messing it up - the old one was unique when it came out and the design has become a classic, almost iconic - but it looks like they've pulled it off.
