Ok, so next month is when i will be getting my new car (still looking like the is in pole position ). So i have seen a few 07 plates for sale at Ford Dealers, generally standard spec. All tend to be up for similar price of £9990.

I will be part exchanging my car for hopefully around £3000 and have just under £4000 cash to put with it (rest of balance will go on credit card or finance).

My question to you all is, how much should i aim to get the for, what is too cheeky and whats a good starting point when negotiating?

I would look around at other STs being sold and see what the going rate is. I don't think you can be too cheeky if you know what a fair price is. They are more likely to be cheeky asking for more than the car is worth. Also always worth going for those extras, 12 months tax, full tank of fuel, car mats etc.

Good luck!

Yeah was thinking for definite asking for 12 months tax, mats chucked in and get them to pay my £80 reg transfer fee. But wondering how much to try knock of the starting price of the car itself. Try get it for £9000 (maybe bit low that)? £9500? It’s a proper Ford dealership who I bought my last car from.

I'd take into account what your current car is worth and what they are giving you. If they are undervaluing by a long way (it's obviously going to be less than a private sale) then you need to consider that.

If it's a decenet price then £9.5k is prob a good price for the ST so yeah aim below and get them to meet you mid way. As long as you pay what you think is a fair price then it's ahppy days. don't walk away thinking I've just paid too much for that cos it'll annoy you for a while - there's loads around so you can afford to be choosy! Make sure they do the first service too!

Good point. well i will be happy with £3000 for my car (was quoted that couple months ago but Parkers have slashed all prices down so hoping i can still get that). Will be cheeky and try get £3500 ish for mine in part ex and get the car for £9500 if i like it.

Sounds like a plan. Just make sure they understand they need you more than you need them. Perhaps say you've seen ST's for around £9k and under privately, but you want peace of mind buying through them blah blah, and you will pay more i.e. up to 9.5k but it isn't worth you paying more, hopefully they'll give you a good deal. Best of luck!

If you want a decent specced car at a good price. My old ST is on my dealers forecourt at £9989 with just under 10,000 miles on the clock. Its on a 56 plate and was owned by me from new. It has pretty much every option on it

Yeah it has been on a few months. I dont know why it hasnt gone yet, they did originally have it at £10,990 which is really high! They gave me £9300 for it back in december so they arent too far away from what they gave me!
I think the only options is doesnt have are the parking sensors and the sun roof.

Shot me if you already know this but.....

Don't take too much notice of what your car is worth, what you want to know is the cost to change.

This is the amount of cash you have to stump up to get your new wheels.

Example:

New car = £9500 - Old car (£3000) = £6500 to change

All these figures can be massaged but the most important one is the final figure of hard cash you have to part with.

As others have said there are plenty of ST's out there so don't be afraid to walk away. If close to a deal, do this anyway mumbling something along the lines of "For a couple of hundred quid I would have signed now!" See how quick they are to get you back into the office.

You should also take a look at Archers of Ashby and Motors of Coalville and go forarmed to any local dealer with their prices. You maybe surprised at their prices and they're only a trip down the M1 from Leeds. I bought mine from Motors Coalville after having stupid prices from Allen Ford Northampton. Got an 06 plate (1800 miles) for what AF wanted for an 05 plate with 25000 miles (same basic spec)

sorry for going on, but at the end of the day you want the best price possible!

Have fun searching

Rob.

hi just been reading your post, herne bay is only 20mins down from me, so did you trade it in for the facelift version and if this is the case what is the difference in the two versions,

i had been looking at a 05 in sandwich but they didnt have all the extras and although i like the white one it is a little too bright.

No the one on the website is the facelift version as well. I traded it in for a Zetec S diesel as running costs were a big factor for me.
Give them a bell. I have bought six brand new cars off them in the past 5 years and they have been outstanding every time.

I wouldn't be concerned about it being there for a few weeks. Should be easy enough for you to get it down to £9.5k now, maybe less, you never know! Make the move asap now!! Good luck!!

my concern is the sea air, i looked at the focus st500 there the other week, well you have to dream and the amount of rust on the discs, on top of that you could feel the grime on the bonnet and it felt rough like out car used to when left it at the ferry port overnight

also forgot to say how did you treat it when you had it, did you drive as a new car or a 2litre 150hp beast.

Yeah I treated it well. I bought it tax free when I was over in Germany with the Forces (from the same garage it's for sale in). It was run in properly and never had any faults with it. It was never involved in any accidents of prangs of any kind and served me well for the year I had it. The only reason I sold it was to switch to an oil burner to save on he tax and fuel costs.

If they have dropped it to £9600 that's a steal with all the options it has on it.
If someone does enquire about say that Ben Smyth (me obviously ) recommended the garage to them. You never know, you may get a better deal if they know I've recommended you. After all I've bought 6 new cars from them in 5 years.

hi thanks for the advice, they said that for the current price 9989 they would put 6 months tax, side strips and parking sensors. a full tamk of fuel and the alloy refurbished is still open to negoiation

they said with the service it has just had and general costs per car they had to pay it will owe them just over 9.500

very tempted

Got for it mate, it served me well over the year I had it and it's a great car. Shame that I had to change to a diesel purely for running costs.

PMd you by the way.
