normally if I dont let it warm up and put my foot down it does start to do it - but I literally moved it from one place to another and had the window down and it sounded much louder than normal - what do I need to do? yep full lock is loudest

I am sure i read of this problem on another post but not sure if it was this site. I'd check my fluid level, if OK and the power steering isn't gone but just noisy let it warm up and take for drive (only if power steering still works). It does on mine occasionally when cold started or driven hard but that is it. usually a calm drive changing gear nice and early in the rev range will sort it then leave it for a while. Sorry not much help i know

Obviously check the fluid level as has been suggested, but it may well be that the power steering pump needs replaced. It happenned to mine that there was quite a nasty whirring sound coming out as you steered round, and that was what caused the problem. Having said that, although it did need replaced, it was still steering perfectly fine.

Might have same problem as me mate. If you dont have any fluid in then this seems like the most logical answer but if not then you need to get ford to check your pressure relief pump and steering rack valve as might be one of those problems. Covered with warranty.

cheers guys, so had the AA guy out and typically it was whirring half as loud when he tested, but suggested the fluid was a little burnt and as Chris suggested need to replace the steering pump. I'm hoping this can be covered on warranty otherwise how much am I looking at shelling out?

It should be covered under warranty - mine certainly was when it needed replacing.

Ford just rang me a min ago, the pump has gone on mine, which is causing the power steering to fail and the loud whining noises. My warranty covers it, just got to wait for part to come in.

People seem to forget that a whining sound can be caused by anything! Wheel bearings are normally the most common problem! Because my power steering practically doesn't work and the whole steering is stiff, its obvious it has to be the pump or valve. If you are ever concerned about your car, as long as you still have a warranty, ford will check it for you for free so just book it in mate.

the K&N is nothing to do with the power steering, wheel bearings etc. It may void your warranty on the engine, but not the steering.

In this case you're right the K&N has nothing to do with the problem. However, as it is a simple job to change it back then it may be worth doing anyways. The trouble is that some dealers WILL make notes of anything that could potentially cause problems in the future, and should anything occur later on down the line then they can flag this up.

Yep but I can either get my paws on a rack for £100 or squeeze Ford for a goodwill gesture.

car went in today, and suprise suprise something is wrong with the steering pump, I knew this before as AA had flagged this. However all they did today was confirm the steering pump needed replacing and couldn't do it today. Have had to rebook car in for the 6th of May for 2 days so they can strip the engine and rectify the problem. GRR

lol Gotta love the dealership I went to who tried to claim they'd never heard of an ST needing a PAS pump. Well mine went in & the steering rack looks absolutely bob on but what they have done is lubed up all the pins and joints. The creak has gone but I'm almost expecting it to come back.
