well today has been quite a shitter. my 4 year old son has been diagnosed with perthes disease and will have to be using a wheel chair soon because he has it quite bad.
just wondering if anyone has ever had to put a kids wheelchair in the boot of a fiesta? or knows of any one who does?
if it dont fit we are getting a focus or a c-max so any info would be very much appreciated.

Hey Rick... I'm really sorry to hear about this... There's nothing sadder than seeing a child suffer. But look on the positive side... It's been diagnosed while he is only young and he has the best chance to recover from it... My best wishes go out to your son, your wife and you, hope he gets better soon...

As for a wheelchair I have not tried myself but I would imagine that the ones for children are smaller in size so possibly might fit in the fiesta boot once folded up... Might have to remove the parcel shelf though as it will stand quite high.

Rick,

you can fit an adult wheel chair in the boot but it means taking out the parcel shelf. You can put them in vertically if you catch my dirft and they fit in ok.
I dont know if they fit in flat down as it was just easier to do it vertically. With that in mind i guess a childs chair would be fine.

All the best to your lad

Really sorry to hear that Rick, that's really awful.

Not sure on the wheelchair side of things, I would imagine it should be ok as has been indicated above.

I wish your son and family all the best, it must be very difficult to have found this out

Sorry to hear about your little boy. Just having a read about it, it can be treated though cant it and he will grow out of it slowly no?? Chin up and keep smiling...be positive

As for wheelchair, i reckon it would fit in there quite easily. Its quite a deep boot and spose if buggys can fit in it then guess a little wheelie can.

As has been said Ricky, really sorry to hear this news, but like the last couple of posts say, i'm sure all will work out good for your son.

ATB Matey.

Kev.

Sounds like you will be O.K with the wheel chair fitting in.

the specialist said there is nothing they can really do for him and he has got to basically stay very inactive for 3 to 4 years to try and slow the deterioration down. no trampoline, football, running, jumping or using his scooter but he can swim and ride his bike. basically nothing that will cause impact on the hip.
it should start to get better in a few years but will never be the same as it was. if it gets a lot worse he will need a hip replacement in his 20's which is quite upsetting but we are staying positive and lucky that he is very healthy in every other aspect. just a shame that he is such an active little bugger and loves being outside jumping around like all 4 year olds do.
thanks for your kind words people, appreciate it

as for the car, any opinions on which diesel to go for? the 1.8 or the 2.0? if we do change cars that is. Liam wants a blue chair with stripes like the car!

I'm very sorry to hear about this... it's never nice anything being wrong but on the positive side he is healthy and loving i very much expect

Just to fill others in on it a little:

Prognosis

Children younger than 6 or 7 have the best prognosis since they have time for the dead bone to revascularize and remodel. Children that have been diagnosed with Perthes' Disease after the age of 10 are at a very high risk of developing osteoarthritis and Coxa Magna.

I walk past cars with adult wheel chairs in all the time. They fold them up and stand them vertically in the boot without the parcel shelf in (or atleast put vertically in the boot also). You shouldn't have a problem with the fiesta. The best way to find out is to ring a dealership up and i'm pretty sure they will tell you.

You'll be able to keep your fiesta i'm sure of it. Good Luck to your son and I really hope he makes a recovery from it. Lots of milk

Sorry to hear about your son but as said, keep your chin up and stay strong for him - he's young enough that he'll still be looking for your reactions and will copy them. He will draw strength from yours.

The wheelchair should be fine, you'll be surprised what you can fit into the back of the fiesta.

I can sort of understand where you're coming from Rick becaue when I was 2, I was diagnosed with Stills Disease which is juvenile rheumatoid arthritis in my knees which can spread and affect every single joint in the body. It broke my parents heart seeing me going from toddling about to in real pain and going through the treatment and physio I needed but as the years progressed the attacks lessened and when I was 14 years old I was discharged from Great Ormond Street's care! Ok they still creak a little but could have something to do with the load they carry *ahem*

Sorry to hear about this At least you know that in a few years he's likely to get over it and live a perfectly normal life. All the best to all of your family.
