full tank of super unleaded 97ron cost me £45.00 and got me around 380miles.

I was doin around 60 on the mway, 50ish on the dual carriage ways 40 normal roads not speeding AT ALL. When I got to the top of snowdonia I took it out of gear going down the side of the mountain for off and on 10miles!! Well cool yeh!! I think so.

Your fuel consumption
( 44.1MPG) (15.6 Km per litre)(6.39 litre per 100Km)
Averaging pence per mile
(40+ mpg for petrol is good under 23 is bad)

thats what i just worked out for you lol

Either your mpg reading is incorrect or you were driving downhill with the engine off!! You can get 45mpg out of the ST at a real push but not 60, the engine simply cannot do it. BTW, you should have got way over 380 miles if the reading was true.

My reading is correct. As my average MPG around town is about 32mpg. I was going down hill with it out of gear for a considerable amount of time. Like I said, it could have been for easily 6-10miles off and on, as before I started to come down the mountain my MPG was around 45-48 as I was driving very steadily paced!

Because I do alot of stop starting town driving stuck in traffic driving (if that makes sense) I tend to reset my MPG counter at the start of the day to give me a better reading and it tends on a really bad day to be around 26-28MPG on a good day about 33MPG but on a 20 mile run around 38-42MPG.

Beat me to this one. Not to say I have done 60mpg (cos it's simply not possible, you'd struggle to do that in a 1.4 diesel) but, After filling the car to it's 9.9 gallon capacity and driving at the speed limits (running the car in period) I averaged 33.7mpg. That had the occasional 4-5k revving but not any thrashing.
As mentioned a while back by Dave ST (now TDi) if you get 30mpg you're lucky.
He's spot on with that cos i've no doubt that the ST, if driven a little sprightly, will never do 30mpg, period.
Oh, by the way, I STILL love my

Like has been said it isn't possible to do 60mpg. That's like 600 miles out of the STs tank!!You'd have had to have rolled the entire way down hill not just for 6 to 10 miles!!

If you're still sure you got 60mpg you may want to check it has the correct engine in it!!

Even I struggle to get 60MPG, your readings out.

I'm doing about 50MPG and I get 430 miles to a tank.

The reading on your computer is out because you were coasting.

I forgot to mention my clock only read 60MPG for about 20 secs if that, before I had to put it back into gear which it drastically fell back down!! All I wanted to let you guys know that the MPG counter does actually go that far up, and is not electronically restricted to 30.3 MPG.

Best I managed on a 60-odd mile mainly motorway trip was 38.9mpg as an average which I was pretty chuffed with. Generally as an average I get about 28mpg.

The biggest problem with the ST is the very short fifth gear which means anything slightly north of 70mph really knocks the economy.

You are better off putting a decent fuel in like Shell or BP, than cheap supermarket fuel. However... the thing with Ford recommending BP specifically will just be a marketing thing because of Ford and BP both being part of the Nectar card scheme, their tie-up with M-Sport etc.

Depends what you're after? Performance gains or fuel economy gains?

I went for fuel economy soon after having it, and fitted an ecotek valve, following a successful trial by Steve! See below threads:

I've done some pretty extensive tests on the ecotek and I can confirm that it does make about a 10% reduction in fuel consuption given all other factors remaining the same.

Thing is that you can get much better gains by driving around slower and more consistantly. If you're on and off the juice and generally blasting about you'll suffer with 25mpg or less. If you're careful you can get 34mpg.

You're new to the car so no doubt spinning wheels trying to pull away.... this will change and so will you've economy with it, but don't think you've ever getting above 40mpg for day to day driving

Biggest fuel economy gains - buy the ZS oil burner!

PS - starting a new project cycling to work and tracking fuel savings off set against increased food consuption...... I'll keep you updated! :-)

That's spot on Steve.
If you have any issues about fuel economy, then don't buy the ST.
I stay with the limits most of the time and get 30mpg. I still have a little blast from time to time but everyone has thier own driving styles.

£11.99 is about right unfortunately. Thieving sods. They don't come off easily if they are pushed on correctly.

I've had no problems *touch wood*

Some people that had problems put some adhesive tape I believe around the inside.

Well there've been quite a few threads about this over the months. There is no point looking in the handbook, I think it states a ridiculous 38mpg combined - this will never happen (for most).

I reset mine the other day driving around locally I was on 25mpg. My trip to work consists of 50 and 70mph roads and I average between 31 and 33mpg.

Unfortunately if you want a quick car the only way you're going to get over 40mpg is in a diesel.

I have an ecotek valve (posts elsewhere on the site) and so does Steve, I think about 10% improvement in fuel consumption is about right. No loss of performance and a smoother idle. It costs about £45 and is simple to fit.

That might get you to 27 mpg

Just to help your decission....

25mpg

Based on 7000 miles per year (not sure what you do, but short drives = low annual milage), you're using approximatly 280 gallons of fuel, or 1260 litres. This, at 115p/l is about £1450 in fuel alone.

If you fit the ecotek and get a 10% improvement you should be spending about £1345.5 so you save about £100 per year which means you'll have £55 in your pocket by the end of the year or in motoring terms - a tank of fuel

Is it worth it - I'd argue not at today's fuel price but with increasing costs the ecotek looks like it could become a popular mod especially for people doing increased milage

Technically it does as it is modifying the car. However, it only modifies one pipe and I can't see what it could affect - if for example you had a problem with your suspension or gearbox you would still be covered under warranty as there's no way it could affect those sort of parts.

does it void the warenty on the car ?

Yes it does - in the same way that fitting an induction kit does. As pointed out, you would be able to argue that the ecotek didn't cause the damage but it certainly would weaken your case for engine related issues.

When I take mine for service I close off the valve and turn it upside down. Only a keen eye would spot it. If you ever did have a warrenty issue, simply replace the vacuum servo hose before you claim from ford - its about £22 for a replacement.

Drove to Manchester from Essex recently and got 39.2 mpg on the journey. Filled up before I left and reset the MPG counter and up until I joined the M6, was getting 42 mpg but once I put foot a little bit, it went down and was on 39.2 when I got to my destination. Average speed was 56 mph according to the computer but that takes into account stopping at lights/junctions and going slower in the roadworks on the M1.
