Hey all, just thought I would share a recent experience I had with a mini cooper s.
Driving home one evening I saw a mini cooper ahead and as I came close he must have seen the performance blue because he thought he would drop a cog and leave me. But he must have been suprised that I was keeping up with him! Every now and then he was flooring it and i was definitly keeping up with him. I'm not gonna put false hope in beating those cooper S's, because its not gonna happen, but keeping up is enough.
When he realised that he couldnt beat me on the straights, he decided to go slow towards a nice long bend, and then floored it, but again I kept my foot to the board, and got rather worried at the speeds we were getting to around the bend (being an ex Astra owner, going round bends fast was not common) but the ST kept the line and still kept up with him.
This car has definitly got a lot faster after doing 1000 miles. I just love passing those smug BMW 320 drivers!!
So I cant wait for another one to try it on!!

Sounds like you had a really good drive, safe but also exciting. Its always great to compare cars... i must add though the Mini Driver must have been a bit of a n00b as the supercharger should have pulled him away on the straights but you would have clawed back on the corners.

Nice one

Chris22,

I'm not being funny mate but if I had a BMW 320 then I'd be smug too - its a much nice car than a Ford Fiesta. Where do you start....the build quality is better, nice looking car - although this is a subjective issue, alot more toys inside the car.

If I could afford it then there ain't no way I'd buy a Fiesta. I bet these Merc, Audi and BMW drivers are looking down their noses, thinking is that all you can afford........out of my way you little chav!!

There's more to life than "keeping up with the car infront".......its all about kudos, and the fiesta ain't got it!!

BMW, Mercs, Audi, VW... alot of these are company cars so what gives them the right to do this then???

The Fiesta is mainly privately owned and tbh... its a little sporty nicely presented car... nothings wrong with the build quality, its the same as any other manufacturer... theres always little niggles but they are nothing major.

I agree with Fiesta RS, the majority of 320 owners are company car drivers and in reality if I had enough money to buy a 320, I wouldn't cos I think BMW rip you off. Yeah its good quality ra ra ra but its overpriced and too common now and just look at the dog face on the new 3 series. Its awful (in my humble opinion), plus my gf's parents both have BMW's and they're in the garage more than they're on the driveway or road being driven... testament to BMW's "quality".. and its not just those two indiov BM's either..

Having said that if I had the money, Id certainly go for a pre new model 7 series.

Well the same point was made on Top Gear last night when they tested the new 3-series. As a piece of engineering its a remarkable car, but it just doesn't have the sort of kudos which people seem to think anymore. I mean, who wants to look like a sales rep ffs?! What I like about the ST is the fact that it can embarrass a lot of considerably more expensive machinery and the look on the faces of the so-called smug BMW and Audi drivers is priceless when they realise whats just gone past them. And don't tell me they don't care either, how many Beemers do you pass just to find that 30 seconds later they're right up your arse again, itching to get past...

That said, I can kinda see what you're trying to say though Gandalf, if I could've afforded something like a Golf (GTi) then I would've bought that over my ST without a second thought.

Wheel on each corner ,engine up front ,some glass and plastic and some metal to hold it all together.Thats what we buy whether its an or a Roller, they all try to do the same job, some better than others, build quality dosn,t come into it certainly 7000 squids worth(ST/BMW320i)The cars will have the same life span and the costs on the will be a lot less all round.A car is just a car and it,s what you get for your hard earnd cash. And Parksy if you could afford the Golf you could afford the BMW and there are a lot of cars in that price range to think about(Civic Type R for example).

I see what you're saying Peter, maybe its just a UK thing, but car snobbery definitely exists over here. You're right, its got nothing to do with build quality or performance or anything, its simply the badge thats on the end of the bonnet. My other half's old housemate was very much like that, she was in the market for a 4 door saloon recently and basically didn't look at anything bar the 3-series. I tried to tell her that she could've gotten an equally well-specced Mondeo, Mazda 6, Passat, whatever, for considerably less but none of them were good enough! lol

I dunno if I could've afforded a BMW though, a 320SE costs near £25k once you've specced it up whereas I know you can get a Mk5 Golf GTi for about £17.5k.

Gandalf you are right I can't afford a BMW, and if I did have the money I would not buy 1. They are well over priced and you would spend all that extra so you can just say "I drive a BMW". (But if I did have the money I would buy an M5!)
The st is a really fun car to drive and coming from a slow car I really enjoy passing a lot of BMW drivers, (not stereotyping!) but a lot do tend to expect you to "move out of the way" when they come along.

And as Parksey said, when you pass a BMW or Audi they are always itching to overtake you. I know that when someone overtakes me in a nova or kitted up corsa I have a little laugh and let it go.

And yes there is more to life than keeping up with the car infront, but I would rather keep up with it then not, I like to have a little fun when driving (where speed limits allow).

having owned 3 bmw 3 series ( all bought with my own money ) it is not really fair to compare them with the fiesta . my st is great fun to drive but compared to the 325 i had i know which one i would do a 400 mile trip in and it would not be the st! that being said i also which one would be more fun on country roads the st by a mile. the best thing about driving the st is that on motorways you do not get morons slowing down in the outside lane and refusing to move over just because your bonnet has a bmw badge on it

The BMW 3 series is the bottom rung of a very big tree and its ownership says a lot about the personality of the driver.

For me I'd much rather have the top rung of a smaller tree than be at the bottom like so many other corporate/family drones that drive around in one.

I'm not boring, middle of the road or dead yet and thus a fun, spunky little hot hatch in the form of the Fiesta will do me nicely. I'll hold out for the BMW when I've got my fur lined slippers, daily delivered Independant newspaper and my 2.4 kids thankyou very much.
