Totally agree with you Hallmark, I own an ST but have driven both...and well the GTTDi is awsome in terms of the way it pushes u back into your seat, something the ST never does which is a shame. But as 1. it has less torque, and 2. it doesnt have a turbo it isnt really to be expected of the ST. It does behave more like a cruiser on the motorways; goes bloody fast pretty quickly but power is delivered pretty seemlessly.

However in terms of handling when u have a blast down some B-roads the Golf is hopeless - really heavy and wallowy and from what i remember the steering very vague. In contrast the ST is awsome well poised and balanced and i reckon could out handle most cars on the road! Keeps a smile on my face anyways!

I think as an Austrian Iīm really qualified to place my input here! (Austria and Gemany have the highest Diesel percentage in the world!)

So: You accelerate with performance (BHP)! Not with torque!!! Only the VW-Audi lobby still postulates the contradictionary roumors.
Not knowing the figures Iīd bet my ass that Dunkyboy's GTI had NO chance against a ST. (not even mentioning the handling! The Golf-V is the first Golf which can be seriously quick in corners. The ones prior to the V had a ridiculous handling)
Torque is just a figure. Knowing both, BHP and NM, sure it gives an idea of the engineīs behavior, but thatīs it.
Nice example: Seat Altea:
140 Diesel BHP, 320 NM takes 9,9 sec till 60 MPH
150 Petrol BHP, 200 NM takes 9,6 sec till 60 MPH
any questions?? Just 7% more BHP, but about 50% less NM though 0,3 sec (which is a lot!) faster.

Ok, so coming back to GTI vs.ST - both have the same BHP. The GTIīs much more of NM could compensate the more of weight, so maybe it would be an open match. But when handling comes into play... :-)

Regards!

Well i have had mine a month and tbh it dont have the wow factor as some of my previous car's but that's missing the point my st is one of the most comfy car's i have owned and it's lowered by 40mm you dont even notice also it's got stage 1 mountune kit so is running 165bhp but my little 1.6 vts @ 135 bhp would of trounced my st but still i preferr my st just for the build quality.
