Hi Guys,

I am looking at getting an ST quite soon but I was just wondering is it ok to use normal unleaded or is it best just to use V Power?

Cheers

Yes, it's perfectly fine to use normal unleaded, although most of us steer clear of the cheap Supermarket stuff.

Hi Smokey.

Regular unleaded is the preferred choice for the ST to be honest, the ECU is not mapped for the higher octane V-Power and other premium unleaded fuels.
I have always used Shell unleaded in my ST and avoided supermarket fuels, to be honest its not really cheaper and I am not convinced they store it correctly.

Hi Niburu,

Sorry yeh I meant to say Shell Unleaded, I would never use the cheap supermarket stuff. I'm please you can use Shell unleaded as V Power is quite expensive.

You can use V Power but its a waste of money, the engine won't make any use of it.
Normal unleaded makes the ST nice and happy

Sounds good mate, are you planning on getting a new one or used (only ask because I think they have stopped making them!)
Its not the cheapest car to run (likes a good drink and pays high taxes!) but is great to drive. Take one out and see what you think .....

Im looking at second hand with no more than 15k miles,

I know it drinks quite a bit that why I asked about the Unleaded as if it needed to use V Power then it would turn out quite expensive but with unleaded its not to bad

Also the insurance is pretty cheap aswell

I used to use sainsbury 97ron in my focus ST and noticed no or very little power loss from the bp ultimate that i used in it for the 1st 3months of its life.
Unless your running a high tuned beast like a focus St,scooby, evo an upwards then just fill it up with the higher ron supermarket stuff unless u got money to burn because the fiesta wont notice any difference imo.

The Fiesta ST is actually mapped to run off BP unleaded 95 RON. If you put higher octane fuels in then it won't give any performance benefits, it will just run rich.

BP Ultimate and Shell V Power etc are more suited to turbo engines. For example, in the Focus ST there is a separate map in the ECU for super unleaded. As soon as it senses that the higher octane fuel is there, it switches to this map. As the Fiesta ST hasn't got this built in, it can't do this, which is why it just ends running rich.

If you run v-power on a standard tuned engine your wasting your money, keep to 95ron unless you tune up dreamscience or bluefin then upgrade fuel to v-power or similar fuel.

I dont see why people avoid supermarket fuels - it is most probably the exact same fuel you are buying from your shell/esso station - as that is who supplies the big supermarkets. Its cheaper too!

Usually Gulf or Jet supply Supermarkets.
It is rubbish.
Asda by me is the same price as Shell so it's not cheaper either.
BP is more than Shell though

"The reason for this was that it was made using reclaimed/scrap toluene solvent which had been used to wash PCBs in electronics factories."

http://iq.lycos.co.uk/qa/show/63584/Who+...a+Morrisons%3F/

Its BP/Shell/Total/Fina who refine it - and texaco/bp/shell/tesco etc use the same fuels from the same storage areas in these refineries - but the supermarkets add additives to thin it out a bit.

Will take what i said back then (my view was informed by Honest John - but apparently he was wrong then)

Theres people in SA using 85ron so i'm sure it will run just fine on 95ron. I normally get supermarket fuel unless the Shell in town is the same price. I might get slightly better mpg from the shell petrol over the supermarket stuff.

Your car will run fine on 95 RON, that is all it is mapped for.

SA's 85 RON is mapped only for SA cars.
If you put it in yours it would die.

I thought it was 91 RON though not 85??

I'm assuming SA means South Africa??? If so, they used 95 and 97 when I lived there, was not aware they had 85 RON??? I wouldn't imagine they would map a car to run on 85 .... ??

I must be thinking of somewhere else. South Africa's is 91,93 and 95ron.

Malta's 85
