Hi all,

I've had enough of the standard speakers in terms of low-end sound, theres just not enough of it. I've replaced the Ford H/U with a good spec Sony and it has helped slightly.

I'm thinking about adding a sub, a small 8" should be find because I dont wnt to carry around much extra weight or lose boot space. I've been looking at the encolsed ones with a built-in amp such as these -

http://www.caraudiodirect.co.uk/pioneer-tswx77a-p-6820.html
http://www.caraudiodirect.co.uk/kenwood-kscsw10-p-6314.html

Can anyone give me their experience/verdict on these all in Subs, for example is it better to add an amp and then sub on its own?

I'm a bit lacking in ICE knowledge so help would be appreciated.

Thanx
Rich

all depends how loud you want it to be mate and the budget you have. You get what you pay for. My favourite sub ever was an Alpine Type R sub, really good bass on that.

Just a quick look, and these are pretty decent Kicker

sorry I first thought those links were for sub and amp!! That Pioneer is soo flat!

Uh no experience in those. My mate got an all in one Fli sub - quite budget really, it makes some noise but nothing on my old alpine.

Cheers mate - was the Alpine the trunk type sub in the box with its own amp. Budget is about £200 quid I suppose including the amp? I'm not that bothered about mega loud just a decent sound that wont distort.

Do you reckon an 8" sub (Alpine / JBL / Kenwood) in a box with an amp would be a better option than one of the tube type ones (as per the link).

Also, has anyone got an links to sites they have had stuff from?

I am sure that by getting a smaller more compact one you will lose some quality and you will pay a premium for it. Therefore £200 for the flat Pioneer probably won't be as good as a standard size sub which you spend the same money on.

I personally think you'd be better off with a separate sub and amp, I had a bass tube before (a cylinder one) and it wasn't that great.

that fli sub is the same as my mate has in his E Class merc! Unfortunately it's built like a tank and you don't hear a great deal of bass! IU am sure it'd be better in the ST though.

Do u use it with the standard speakers and does it make a big difference? I'm think that even if I add a sub, will the speakers distort even tho the sub will handle all the low?

Hi, just been and bought a sub with built-in amp, I'm not that clued-up on this stuff so can you tell what i'll need to wire it in. I know I need an amp wiring kit but does that include power and audio cables? Are there different types of power cable I'll need or are they the same?

Also, has anyone links to any sites I might get them from eg Halfords?

Thanks

wiring kit comes with power and audio go into your local ice shop and tell them u have eg: 600 watts 1000 watts ect ect and they will give u the right kit oh and make sure you dont put all the cables down one side of the car.
if your an hours drive or so come down to essex and i could give u a hand to fit it

Cheers mate, i'm up North but appreciate the offer!

I'll nip into a local ICE store and get a mate who's a bit more cluued up than me to help on it. Its only a two channel amp so I suppose that will go into one to power the single sub?

Can you give me your opinion on kicker amps cos thats what I've got with an Inf ref sub?

Cheers

any reason you say to put all wires down one side of the car? I seem to remember once having a problem where there was interference... I could be remembering incorrectly though...

Is there any chance one of you can list individually the leads i need to connect the amp?

I know I need an amp power lead but not sure what goes from the HU to the amp.

I've just had a look at Halfords and they are asking about £30 fo the kit. Would it be cheaper to buy them individually? If so is there anywhere on-line you can recommend?

Cheers

Heres a pick of the sub, the amp is housed around the back but I havent go round wiring it in yet. I've bought the autoleads wiring kit so that should hopefully do the job.

I got the sub, enlosure and kicker amp from a local ad for about thirty quid, seems like a bargain!

Is this kit ok?

the amp with it is quite an old model I think, its a Kicker 100 SI Series (its not that big in size). Does anyone know what power output this is and what will the drain be like on the normal battery.

Will I have problems or will it be unnoticable?

Cheers mate - I'm not that bothered about it being mega-loud, (tho no doubt the amp will do the job,) I'm more bothered about a decent low end sound cos most of my music is dance & house stuff.

I'm getting it wired in soon, looking forward to some decent thumping sound !!!!

After all of the above and finally getting aroud to wiring up the amp, just discovered that my Sony stereo does not have any pre-outs. What a dissapointment!!!!

I just assumed with it being new and quite high spec unit that it would have them.

Got to find a different stereo now then, (anyone getting rid of HU please PM me)

there's a device you can use to make your standard wires provide pre-outs.... I will have a look for the post - it's a cheap fix, no need to change headunit
