Well...

After driving the RS around today catching up with last minute items I needed to get for tomorrow I felt the house around 8pm and about a 1mile down the road I hear this REALLY loud screeching, grinding sound from the car... honestly it was so loud I pulled straight over and looked under the car as I thought the exhaust had fell off or something.

Just to fill you in... during the week i went to Kwik-fit and had a free brake check done by them... brilliant guys and they told me me my brakes were fine and had about 5000 miles the fronts and the back were new (i had the backs changed when i purchased it not long ago) so come back then... so obviously was happy about that... but with this grinding sound i sound it maybe a wheel wasn't on properly... so, i put the windows down and rolled the car checking the wheels in the mirror and sticking my head out aswell as physically checking them... all were in fine.

After driving along slowly a little more i figured out it was the back nearside (rear passanger)... I remember having a similar noise when my silver focus's bake pads wore away until the metal was grinding against the disc... but i new they were new on te back so obviously there was a more serious issue.

I crawled back home and called the RAC out as i feared for a bigger problem...

At around 10.30pm a really nice guy turns up in an RAC van... looks it over, jacks the car up...

and...

i'll leave you guys to guess what was the problem and how it was fixed...

Sorry to hear you had the problems but good that you got it fixed. By the sounds of it, it was something daft.
Will have a think

Was it a tool that the Kwik Fit lads had left in the braking mechanicals or something?

The Kwik Fit guy had left some of his corned beef and mustard sandwich in there?

That would be a disaster in an . You'd have to resort to opening the doors and scraping feet on the ground to slow down!

Congrats Scotty on the beautiful RS... How're you liking it?

Haven't been online for ages so am catching up on on a lot of posts...

My bet goes for the wheel arch liner that came undone. ?

Plenty of people have guessed that a tool of some kind was left in, which is what I think, but I'll be the first to try and guess for the second part of your question as to how they fixed it. I'll say they reached in and took the tool left behind out.

I'm not sure where the spare wheel is on those, but I'll guess maybe it's under the car and the carrier for it unclipped itself.

I reckon a stone got up on the old stone guard on the brakes because Steve/Phyzzo pulled away in his RS and it made the most god awful screeching grinding noise & thats what it turned out to be.

Spot on!!!

It's crazy that Phyzzo had the same problem also...

The RAC guy said to me that he gets called out to this problem every now and again but he would bet that it would never happen again.

The only way I can describe the sound is if you have ever heard an exhaust pipe that has fell off a car and is griding on the road... that scraping metal sound... was awful.

It was simply a stone stuck inbetween the rear metal guard which is housed on the inside of the rear disc... bizzar!!!

There was some brilliant guesses here though...

In reply to Nick... the car is AMAZING... I'm loving it to bits but the weather isn't dry enough yet to get the power down so it's a little frustrating as i'm having to change to 3rd and 4th at 30mph to put my foot down and get away from the lil saxos when 2nd gear would just be like wharp drive but even then i'm getting huge wheel spin.

Has anyone else ever had a similar problem?

It is strange that the two of you have had the same problem in the same car. I'm glad to hear that it was just a freak ocurrance that won't have caused any damage rather than than what me and many others thought down to a mechanic!

I know what you mean mate... Weather just sucks and with 17 inch winter tyres the wheelspin is even greater... I'm really waiting for warmer weather and putting the 18's back on and have some track fun soon...

There is no spare wheel on the Focus RS Mk1... The 18'inch wheels were too big to fit in the space saver well so instead of a space saver there's a quick repair kit.

*does a lap of the forum*

Oh I rule!!!

Yeh he'd come to a pub meet with STOC in the RS and was just leaving when it made the noise. Everyone turned round to look because it was that loud and that awful!! Yeh it was horrid! He stopped there & then and he & Arun had a quick look under the car, saw the stone and either picked it out or it fell off... cant remember .... hehehe

Interesting stuff there Nick... so you say the winter tyres are even worse?

I was actually considering purchasing another set of 18" RS Alloys and whacking winter tyres on them for next year so that the car would be a little better in the horrid road conditions as currently it's pretty dangerous at times and it's a battle with the car when the turbo comes into boost and the diff cuts in due to loss of traction.

They are worse in dry and even wet weather than regular 18's... I have to have them on though in case I hit snow... Obviously they will be better than summer tires on snow but I was speaking of traction on non-snow conditions above... But to be honest Scott, the RS is probably the worse car I've ever had to drive on the snow... If I were to give some advice I'd say to leave it in the Garage if the conditions are really bad...

As a matter of fact it's dumping snow here at the moment and I've decided it was much safer to stay and work from home...

A couple of weeks back I was driving home and though I was not even going to make it up the last hill... Eventually I had to reverse, that's how bad it was... It's all a traction problem as downhill it's always a blast to drive her, (even on snow) and the LSD does not really help despite what one would think.

Good advise Nick... next winter the is staying in the garage me thinks... I believe that in the current conditions my 1.8 would be quicker as i simply cannot get the power down and the tyres on the 1.8 are excellent in these conditions!!!
