Firstly..Hi everyone.

I hope you're all doing well.

Background information, i currently own a Renault Clio 1.2 16v, but i'm in discussion with my local Ford dealer regarding the New Fiesta ST. I've been on this site for a few days reading peoples reviews/thoughts/opinions on the ST, and i can say thus far is, i'm impressed.

As you know i currently own a Clio, and people would argue that i should look at the Clio Sport 182, but being only 21, can prove to be extremely harsh on insurance, so my thoughts are, lets look at a car with less power, lower insurance group, but with huge potential. The ST stands out by a mile!

Currently in the process of getting my car valuated at the dealers, and booking a test drive. I hope i enjoy the car as much as you all have!

A few questions if i may:

I do like the centre console in the ST, but would want my own Head Unit installing. Is there away of keeping the 6-CD and having your own Head Unit? I'm not too fussed if you cant.

If i went for the leather seat option, does that come with heated seats? If so, where is the button located to activate the heat to come through on both driver and passenger seats? How much are they, £970?

What 0-60 times are you getting? Ford claims 7.9, while What Car claim 7.8. What do you guys think?

Why is ESP not standard on a Sport car? Very odd that one. How much is it?

Is it proven that the standard 17 inch wheels don't slow the car down? Would of thought 16's would of been ample as the rolling radius would be the same, but it would be a lighter wheel?

What is the tuning potential on the ST? Chip, Induction Kit, De-Cat Exhaust, anything else?

Anyway i think this post is long enough (lol), i hope to have good conversions with you all regarding the ST! Your comments will be most useful.

Thanks, Chris (Tyson) - Tyson is preferrable though!

Hi, welcome to the board! Have decided what colour you might get - and with or without stripes? It'll certainly be v diff to the Clio 1.2 and IMO will beat the 182 handsdown on handling/ cornering and comfort.

There are various posts already on the site about 0/60's, scope for improving performance (DanST has his up to about 200ps I think)

Re the leather seats, they are heated and the switch is located under the drivers seat - not sure if this is for both or individually controlled - PARKSEY will know - he has them.. and as for the ESP, I think the gen consensus is that you don't really need the ESP on the ST, as its been engineered to be as safe as possible, plus 150ps isn't exactly ott... that being said though, I was considering it when I was looking at getting an ST so.. I think its 275.00 factory fit ONLY and if you buy ESP you HAVE to buy the Reflex Pack too (side and curtain airbags).

Lastly re the CD head, a few people inc Pinky have changed their head unit (I like ur head unit pinks..) and I guess as long as u have a multi changed hooked up, you would keep the ability to have 6 discs.. or is that not what u meant? the 6006 is a massive lump of a unit, if you take the front fascia off, its a lump of metal, so you have to buy the din bit etc etc. Others will be able to advise better.

Hope that goes some way to help..

Oh dear, not another Chris on this site... Welcome to the club btw.

As for your questions:

As far as I know, there's no way to keep the existing 6 CD changer with a new headunit. The standard CD changer is an in-dash double size unit, not a boot/glovebox changer like you get on most other cars. If you wanted to change the headunit then you'd need to get a CD changer to go with it.

The ST has part-leather but if you pay for the full leather you get heated seats too. There's a simple on/off switch (with a timer) which is located on the base of the seat - a bit fiddly IMO. I've not used them yet as its not been cold enough. If you can afford it then I'd recommend getting full leather, it looks saweeeeeeeet.

I did a 0-60 sprint at Silverstone the other weekend, got 8.76 seconds. Not spectacular, but then I've never done it before. Some magazines have said that the quoted figure (7.9) is unrealistic, but I know of guys with standard cars who have done it in 7.2 seconds.

I wouldn't bother with ESP if I were you. The ST isn't massively powerful anyway, and in the dry the Pirellis offer more than enough grip. ESP costs £350 and as Chris says, I believe you need to get the Reflex pack as well to get ESP. That's another £275. I haven't driven one with ESP yet so can't really comment though, but I would say its not necessary. The only reason a lot of manufacturers sell cars with some sort of stability control is to cover up a crap chassis anyway...

You don't notice any loss in performance from having 17s on the car, tbh but I've not tried an ST with the 16s (you can't get them in the UK). The car looks a billion times better with the 17s anyway.

Not much is out in the way of tuning parts for the ST yet. There's a few exhaust systems about, the Milltek is favoured at the moment, the full system with de-cat being proven to give a 21bhp increase. Induction kits will be out soon enough, but you'll want an enclosed one due to the cramped engine bay allowing too much heat to get in. Superchips hope to have a Bluefin out shortly too (that's what they told me at Ford Fair). I reckon with a proper induction kit, full exhaust and chip/remap, you could easily see an extra 30bhp, if not more.

Anyway, hope that helps Tyson, sorry for the lengthy reply!

Yay, another member of club chris!

Just adding to some of the comments above, the 6006 is not 3 units like it looks, behind the facia its a massive cube thing as tall and as wide as you'd imagine. I know some people have had problems with it and changed it. Personally I don't think its bad for a unit that comes with the car, and wouldn't think about changing it unless I was to start having trouble with it, as much as anything because I suspect it would be quite fiddly to do.

With the ESP, I wouldn't bother with it especially with the reflex pack pushing the cost up further. I find the handling good enough as it is, and I know that if I had it fitted I would have it switched off more often than on, but that may be down to the way I drive. Perhaps someone who has it fitted could share some comments?

I'll have to agree to differ with Parksey here about the full leather seats here. I just think they are a tad too expensive, feel the way the partial leather and fabrics go together fits the st well, and just wonder if full leather seats will get a little sticky in hot weather.

Hope some of this helps.

Thanks guys, your help is appreciated!

I won't bother with ESP, i guess there is no need! Money isn't really an issue, so i may go for the full leather. It's just that i wish they did black leather trim with red/blue leather inserts, because i think the leather trim and red/blue cloth looks really nice and suits the interior.

I'm unsure on colour, i really like the Performance Blue, but haven't seen one in the flesh, and photo's don't do them justice, so can't comment. Red looks nice with stripes, and the white looks amazing! Really stands out imo, especially with those stripes!

Going down to the dealership after work, to take a second look. The car looks amazing from the outside. Those bumpers give it such an aggressive stance, yet still gives off a subtle effect. Interior looks wicked, those seats are just what it needed. Only sat in them for a short period, are thye comfy over long distances?

I'm weary of magazines saying 7.9 to 60 is unrealistic, yet some of you guys have done it in 7.2. I hope you guys claiming that, are not being biased, like a lot of Civic Type-R owners i know who claim 6 sec dead to 60! LMAO!

I will keep you updated on my position.

Tyson.

Having sat in them non stop for around three and a half hours on Monday night I can tell you they definitely are comfortable over long distances, my back wasn't aching at all.

Just on colour. I think if you want a reasonably 'lairy' looking car, aggressive etc etc, go for Red with full stripes. If you want something that people will say "mmm nice colour" get the perf blue. Swiss Nick has a white one and I saw one in Cardiff the other day.. it does look good, but just perhaps a smidges less aggressive than the other colours. maybe stripes would aid that. depends on the look you're going for tho.. and how much time u have to clean it!

Welcome to the site Tyson!

I agree with ChrisCumbria about the seats! We (ChrisCumbria, ChrisSussex, Nicky, FiestaRS, chrisST) met up and I drove from South East London to The Cotswolds, along the jam packed M25 and belting along the M4 & A roads (legally! *ahem*) and the seats were as comfy as can be. I do a lot of town driving in and around London and they are just as comfortable then as with long distance motorway driving.

Might I recommend performance blue with the side strpes?

You'll find on this forum we arent a "my ST does 0-60 in 7 seconds flat" & cant back it up. For the most part (ChrisSussex) we're sensible and fairly honest with what we say on here. Mainly because we know we'll meet up at some point & have to prove it *hehe*

I had my head unit changed from the 6006 (my new 6006 turned up after only 3 weeks!! Now I gotta send my old one away & hope me CDs come back...). I'm sort of disappointed I dont have a 6 CD changer but I dont miss it massively, like you said, I'm not that bothered. Here's a pic:

People have commented about the gap underneath but can I just say it proves to be a very useful sunglasses case/£1 for the Dartford Tunnel/QE2 Bridge tolls space *lol* It also now freaks me out now that someone pointed out the console looks like a face (air vents as the eyes etc)

Crikey there are a few Chris' on here!

ChrisCumbria - Thanks for the info there mate, you have dispelled my worry about the seats!

ChrisSussex - I can see where you're coming from with the colours, no mentioning of black though and tbh i haven't seen many on the road, nor show room! Only colour i have ever owned is black so may look to change. I can see lots of people going for red, then blue, then white, then black, then silver. Is that the general feel in the forum also?

My current car gets treated to a clean once a week, usually Sat or Sun, as i work during the week, and gym at nights (no time for the Mrs she keeps telling me, lol), but if i bought the ST it would get treated all the time, as i think it looks very, very nice!

So to put my mind at rest..The ST can hit 60 in the late 7 seconds?

Going from a car with 75bhp, to a car with 148bhp will be really something! Can't wait for the test drive. I hope i'm smiling like all you guys are! If i'm honest i have driven quicker, but who hasn't? It's what you can do with the speed that you have got that counts, and as everybody knows, cars that are quick in a straight line, may get beat when you hit the corners!

The Clio Sport 182 with the 'Cup pack (suspension)' etc, apparently handles extremely well around the corners. Is the ST better in your honest opinions?

Tyson.

I wouldnt know about better because I havent driven the Clios but the cornering ability of the ST hasnt failed to amaze me yet *heh* Like the hook line in the adverts said "Loves corners"

Excellent, thats very promising to hear.

I hear people saying that the car is lovely to drive 'around town' - but when does the power actually come into play, and when does it peak? 3k revs, 4k, 5k? When does the ST redline 7.5k revs? (I appreciate that those with 1,000 of less miles haven't done it yet!)

Can you hit 60 with only the first 2 gears? If not, thats potentially why the car is claiming only 7.9 to 60...?

Hows the torque? Again Ford cliam 140Ib/ft, but when does that peak? 2.5k revs? Does it force you into the back of the seat? Does it last? Can you feel much torque in 4th and 5th?

Apologies for all the questions, but it is a big decision afterall, the car has to be right, lol!

Tyson.

I dunno about the bulk of your questions as I don't have an ST, but the engine needs to get up to about 4k before it comes into its own.. much like my Puma.

The ST only has 7.5k revs on the clock, hence the redline will probably kick in around 7,250 revs, so theres not a lot of time being spent in the peak power band.

This accurate?

Lol, sounds like a good idea ChrisSussex. I'd be up for that!

Does anybody know of the 2006 ST, apparently totally different inside, but exactly the same on the outside? Is it worth waiting for? Anybody have any links or information on it?

I went back to my local dealership last night for another look, and i cant get the bloody car out of my head! Test drive is next. I will keep you guys posted with how the drive goes. Do dealerships usually lend you the car for a day, so you can do whatever you want with it (within reason of course)? I'm worried about not using the cars full potential with a sales man in the car with me!

Insurance would be the next thing to look at. I have a few quotes already. Anybody know of any ST friendly brokers? Anybody here who is 21 and owns an ST?

Thanks guys!

Tyson.

Hi Tyson,

I'm 20 ( I was 19 when I got it in March) and my insurance from elephant.co.uk is £830 ( 2 years NCB + pass plus), I don't think thats too bad, its cheaper than what I used to pay for a Fiat Punto 1.2!

The facelifted fiesta has slighty different headlights that don't look much different but to my knowledge nobodys seen the new interior, but rumour has it that its a bit better. I think it really depends how log your willing to wait, I could barely hang on for the new 05 plate!

You think the dealerships treat their demo cars with kid gloves???? *LOL* On my test drive he took me to a 50mph road, we swapped seats & after pulling away and feeling comfy, I booted it *lol* Still makes me smile when I do that now I had 2 test drives from 2 different dealerships (the first one back on 4th or 5th January, the ST had only *just* got off the trailer!) and it was a normal 10-20 minute drive. I'm not sure I've heard of dealerships giving the ST for a day because they are so popular.

Thanks for that ChrisST, much appreciated. If anyone else could shed some more light on the face lift 06 plate ST would be a great help.

Chris, 20 and owning a 2.0L 150bhp Sport Hatch car is good going! Well done mate! I get my 3 years NCB in december so if i waited that long, then i guess i should wait for the face lift, but will just have to see how the test drive goes! May end up signing there an then.

Chris you got any pic's you can mail through to me, i think i saw some in the forecourt but they weren't very big? I just want to get a feel for the performance blue colour. Thanks.

Righty-o then: If you wanna TD the car on your own and for a decent amount of time you can book an extended test drive via the TalkBack Club on the Ford UK website BUT... its orientated around company car drivers, so technically you need to be considering getting a company car - if you had a company who wouldnt object to you putting the co. name on the booking form then you'd get away with it...... then you TD the car and fill in a survey at the end of it. I did it with the Focie and I've had no pressure sales since... - depends how daring you feel..

ChrisCumbria, yep, free entrance to all Club members inc Nicky as Honourary member!

TISSUES:

Right. I know you don't want me to explain but..... since someone DID ask lol...

Its not hard really (well!), if you're gonna be in Bird Land with all those scantiliy clad ladies, I should imagine that you might need something to clean up with. Hence the tissues.

Im absolutely bloody disgusting aren't I. I'll get my coat!

Its lovely that mate, i bet you're really chuffed with it! I would be!

Those 17's really suit the ST, Ford have done well there. Looks like you have the interior styling too, nice!

Still unsure on what colour to get, argh! Such a difficult decision! I think i need to see them all in the flesh, because as you say in your post, photo's dont give a true reflection of the colour, but its unlikely that any garage has all the colours lined up for viewing, lol!

Tyson, the larger dealerships will possibly have a selection of a few of the colours (not all I expect) 'down the yard' behind the dealership, cos Ford UK make the dealers buy a few, then they sit down there until bought..

Listen to all the off topic nonsense on this thread! Couldn't believe it when I came on and saw 43 new posts...

Tyson - for what its worth, if I bought mine again then I'd definitely get white with full blue stripes, it just looks awesome in the metal and you don't see too many white ones on the road. Failing that, I'd recommend red, its the best colour to go for if you don't want any stripes and looks good with them too.

An extended test drive will be difficult to get, I'm 26 and all I got was a 15 minute accompanied drive around a pre-determined route. Don't take this the wrong way but dealers generally won't be too keen on letting "youngsters" out on their own for a half/whole day in the car... Best bet is to go to a few local dealers so you can drive different cars on different routes. When I drove the demo car at my local dealer it had 3k+ miles on it so was nice and loose.

As far as the power is concerned, the redline is at 6,250 and peak power comes in about 6,000rpm so you do have to rev it to get it going. Peak torque is about 4,000rpm so also quite high, but there's adequate acceleration from about 2,500rpm in pretty much any gear. Having taken it on track, the performance is massively impressive provided you keep it above 5,000rpm. Its refined when you're just pottering about town though, you never find yourself in the wrong gear and getting overtaken by buses, cyclists, grannys in Nissans, etc.

As for the inevitable Clio comparisons... The Clio is easily the quicker, more thrilling car. If you want a car purely for thrashing down back roads and going on track then get the Clio. If you need a daily driver which is 9/10ths as good as the Clio when you want it to be but a million times more refined, practical, comfortable, better made, better looking, and cheaper to run then get the Fiesta.

Thats a fair old trek, lol! I guess if i went on the Ford website they could list my local dealerships. I'm only 3 mins from the main Manchester dealer (i work in manchester) and there must be more between Manchester and home (Rochdale). Will take a look.

Idea idea if the Fiesta RS is worth waiting for? Will it make it to the production line? What is the latest?

Thanks Parksey, a few very good points, and well made (might i add) - Thanks! I do a lot of travelling and as petrol isn't cheap now a days i'm thinking ST, I like my comfort, toys, and afterall in a few months, there will be mods available to get it up to the Clio's standards.

According to Ford, the Fiesta RS won't happen. They've acknowledged that there wouldn't be a market for a car like that, particularly at the sort of price they'd need to sell it for, and have canned it.

The Fiesta RS is officially on the backburner at the moment. If it were to come out I wouldn't expect anything before around 2007 at least.

that goes for the Focus RS too Tyson
Something about research & development costs being too high - which would push the price tag price up which'd put it out of the game

Cheers Tyson.

From what I've seen/heard from other owners, you will easily be able to get +30bhp from a full exhaust, induction kit and a chip, and it shouldn't cost much more than about £1500 all-in. A lot of money, granted, but its a decent gain for it and will take you up to Clio-matching power.

The economy on the ST isn't great though, its one of my few concerns with the car. If you do a lot of miles then you might be better off getting something like the Zetec S TDCi (although personally I'd go elsewhere for a warm diesel hatch). I struggle to get more than 300 miles out of the tank on mine, so it doesn't have the greatest range. What with unleaded costing me 91.9p a litre, I'm normally looking at about £42 to fill it up.

And as for you spammers...

I think the 21k price quoted for the proposed Group N st, which isn't all that much more powerful than the standard version, shows why, at the moment at least, it wouldn't be economical to produce the RS.

As someone has mentioned on another forum, The Group N is not an ST you can go and order from your local dealership. This is a kit available from Motor Sport or something and is a kit which costs £9,100 pushing the cost of buying it all (car + kit) to £21K. Its a rally version of the ST and not really something you can pop to Tescos (spoon!!!!! *lol*) in.

Right, okay, thanks for the info. I need to think long and hard as to whether to wait for the face lift ST model, or i may be that impressed with the test drive that i sign straight away for the current model. Only time will tell! Off to the garage so chat in a bit!

Parksey, i only get 350 out of my 1.2 16v Clio, so you must not have a heavy right foot, lol!

I don't drive it like I stole it, but I do travel quite a few miles each week so need to take it a bit easy to avoid having to fill it up too much. There's only so many £42 batterings my bank card can take each month!

Good luck at the garage though, let us know your thoughts when you get back.

Not a clue on the techie stuff or 0-60 times! but as far as colour goes I'm a bit biased as I have Perf Blue ST hence the name "blueisthecolour" but given a 2nd chance I think I would favour a White with full stripes these look just fantastic but maybe you need to be a bit of a show off you will get lots of attention.
Seats? no need for full on leather unless you really can't live without heated seats & imo they do make the interior dark. the normal 1/2 leather are oh so comfy

Hi guys,

Back from the garage. I think the sales guy wanted to try his luck with me, he only offered £2,700 for my 52 plate 1.2 16v Clio, meaning if i were to go ahead with this deal, my current car has lost about 5k in 2 years and 8 months! What's that all about? So with the ST, interior pack, privacy glass and discounting my car, the deal came to £11,300!

I've read on other parts of this forum that some guys got this price without even part ex'ing their own car. How did you manage that?

Does anyone have any experience with using the internet to buy new cars for cheaper than list price, for example, cardiscountstore.co.uk or any of the others?

I'm test driving the car tomorrow lunch time so will keep you updated on that.

I looked at the performance blue colour, and wow(!) that car looks so nice! Will prob get it with only half leather seats!

Tyson.

Not sure where you are located but www.archersofashby.co.uk in Leicestershire are offreing the ST for £12,495 + any extra's you may want.

I used their website to barter the price down at my Local Dealer & they actaully beat that price including the extra's + I got £400 more for my p/x!!.

Dealers sre trying to stand firm on the price of the ST as they know they can sell em, all I can say keep trying.

Coast to coast cars are supposed to a good internet supplier.

Performance Blue by the way Greeat Choice

I did the same as blueisthecolour, I printed a quote off an internet broker and showed it to my local dealer, they were quite happy to negotiate. They went back and checked it on the computer and then said they could do it for £100 more than that, which was decent considering I ordered it in January when there weren't many available. Just hold tight and in most cases you'll get what u want!

Lol, i just took it in my stride, i did snigger for a few seconds when he said. At least it gives me a rock bottom price, so i can only work upwards from that!

Thanks blue, can i part ex my car on that site also, or did you just use the site at your local dealer as a reference? 10.6k is a good price for a new ST!!

Test driving it today, good i hope i'm impressed, although 15 mins is not long enough imo!!

There are a few things you can try. If you've a couple of different Ford dealers locally you can try playing them off against each other, they won't want to lose business to the other. Or saying that if they give you X then you'll sign the dotted line today etc. From originally being offered £3000 at one dealer I managed to get £3500 for my 2000 X reg Fiesta with 36k on the clock, plus the stripes thrown in for nowt.

Cheers Chris, i will play them against each other. I have printed off quotes, off internet sites to see if they can match them, and if not, i will go to another dealership and try it on with them. They are standing firm because there is a waiting list, and they know that they will sell!

I'll keep trying, they is discounts on everything you buy now-a-days!

For example i got a quote (online (coast2coast)) for the:

ST
Privacy Glass
Sunroof
Grab Handle (passenger side)??
Side stripes
Interior styling pack
and Performance Blue matallic for £11,388.

Can anyone recommend any other internet sites, and can anyone say they have used Coast to Coast? (or did you just use it for reference)?

Tyson.

You'll find that attitudes from dealers will vary greatly as far as the price goes. When I bought my 206, I successfully beat the dealer down to match an internet price, but the local Ford dealers were having none of it when I was enquiring about the ST. I got a very good internet quote and took it in and they basically just smirked and kept trying to make out that the car off the internet was an import or an ex-demo or whatever. They resolutely refused to budge far from the list price so I just got up and walked out.

Don't be afraid of buying online, you'll still get the same car with the same warranty and backup that you'd get if you bought from a main dealer. Ok, some cars may be pre-registered (mine was) but it was still brand new, it had only been first registered the day before I collected it and only had 8 miles on the clock. There was even a set of mats and some petrol in it (more than you'll get from an average Ford dealer), and the part-ex that I was offered through the internet company was more than favourable, I doubt I could've got much more had I sold my car privately.

If you're interested, I bought from http://www.allbrandsnew.com

Their phone number is on the site, if you speak to a guy called Pete in their sales office then he should be able to put together a decent deal for you. I even got the full leather seats for about half the option list price...

As for coast2coast, I know of a few guys off another forum who bought their cars through there and haven't had any complaints.

You may also find that internet retailers have a better stock then your local dealer so you won't have to wait so long to get the car.

Hi all,

Back from my 20 minute test drive, and all i can say is wow! The car put a huge smile on my face. The car really livens up around 4.5k revs through until 6k! The seats are amazingly comfy so happy with that, and the car feels very confident hitting those corners. I stayed in second for this one roundabout, and had the back end twitching which i wasn't expecting, but i did push it hard. It did a great job in keeping firm, which impressed me. I told the sales guy that i go on track fortnightly, so he let me nail it. The fun thing about that car is that nobody knows of it (apart from you guys) and it suprises everyone when you smoke past them (within reason). Next step is to try and negoiate a price, or go through a internet site and get one bought! Fantastic!

Stand firm they know they can sell ST's but if they know you're gonna buy one for sure from who ever where ever & you have the cash or the illusion (IE balls to play with em)to prove it then they will not let you go elsewhere! my dealer took a loss on his sale just to get "figures" for the end of the Month don't give up!! I got Free side stripes,Free Proper Ford ST floor mats, 1st Annual service Free,Free Mettalic Paint. Total price all in £12500 & I thought that was expensive!!

Hi Tyson, I bought mine from broadspeed.co.uk got it for £11495 including interior pack and metallic paint. Received a great service from them and doubt if i would use a dealer ever again, the car was delivered to my doorstep on a transporter with 11 miles on the clock and actually came from a main Ford dealer as it has their number plates, tax disc holder etc.
If you are buying from a dealer though wait until the end of the month, about now is ideal for getting a deal, so that they can get it signed up before the end of the month and make their figures look good, sounds silly but it works!
Glad you enjoyed your test drive, it really is an excellent car and i hope you manage to get one sorted soon!

I will be wanting an "O" soon enough! Can't wait to have one full time!
