It's not normally that bad, it usually only takes four hours to get to the midlands. The problems just because of the bridges on the A596 and A597 through Workington that have collapsed forcing everyone to do a 20 mile detour to get round the road closure which in turn is causing massive congestion (2 hours) to get through a few miles of the A66 - the route I have to use to get out of West Cumbria - and there aren't even any minor road alternatives available.

Unfortunately it's going to be that way for quite a long time as it's now expected to be 3-4 years before the two collapsed bridges are replaced as the Highways Agency is refusing to contribute anything for their replacement and Cumbria County Council can't afford to pay the £10 million cost either at the moment.

you have to love how this country solves problems....... mind they are more than happy to pump billions into the banks and fighting wars the other side of the world but when it comes to looking after folk at home the government seems to do nowt maybe if they spent the money wasted on MP's bath plugs and gardeners on infrastructure the good folk of Cumbria could go about their business

the banks should give the money for the bridges instead of giving bonus' to the idiots who put us in recession!

It's awful that they are not doing anything about the bridges that have been destroyed due to the weather conditions. That is hardly anyones fault... probably the governments fault for not assessing the land mass geographically enough and realising the aging stone bridges would not stand up to the power of flooding on the valleys. They should drill into the ground and build solid and higher bridges that will support more traffic and ever changing weather conditions... you should argue... why wasn't this done before it happened? A statue or stylish event costing millions can be done without any problems but critical infastructure will not be replaced... hmm

Will someone please think of the children!!!

Surely that makes massive pollution as everyone has to drive further and in congestion resulting in much more burnt fuel... plus gives someone a job

Bloody ridiculous!!!! Can't believe that, it really makes you wonder where all our taxes are going! On a side note me as a PE teacher has to have a CRB certificate for EVERY school I go in as the rules have now changed.....so for every school that I visit (6 per year) I have to have a new CRB disclosure form which costs the school £70 per application. WHERE IS THIS MONEY GOING TO? Because it certainly is not going to help the people of Cumbria! Chris, my heart goes out to your community and I hope it gets sorted!!! I think an ST meet needs to happen up there and we will get the press involved! "Team ST role in to Cumbria and want answers form government muppets"
