Hi,

Thought I'd post a brief note regarding my recent upgrade at Mountune.

On Friday, I upgraded from the 165 to the 185 kit which includes Piper cams/valve Springs and a remap.

After spending the weekend in London, I finally got to put this upgrade to the test on my journey back to Manchester yesterday evening.

I am really impressed with the power from 4500rpm upwards. You can feel the kick even without noticing any difference in torque. I seemed to catch up with traffic much quicker (obviously depending on the type of car infront of you). However, one thing I cannot get used to is how lumpy it's at around idle. Through conversations with Mountune, they advised it's due to the performance cams. Even with nearly 10 years of driving experience, this has affected my driving ability in the lower rev range as it can stall quite easily. You need to ensure you give it some gas when pulling away etc.

Overall, I'm very pleased with this and despite the above, I would recommend this purchase to anyone especially the 165 MT owners. You won't be disappointed.

I've heard it takes a few days for the ECU to adjust properly so i'd imagine the lump issue will die down over time.

Although brief, your review hasn't encouraged me to go 185, i just love pulling away from low revs and couldn't bear having my power band shifted so dramatically!

I'd recommend you go to some of those track days, i'm sure the upgrade would be worth its weight in gold there!

yep, run it for a few weeks and it will settle a little, use VPower and Denso Plugs/Magnecor leads and maybe earth your cylinder head to the bodywork all will help with the idle. Keep us updated as you go along and when your next in town take me out for a spin !

To be honest I haven't noticed any loss low down. If you look at the 0-60 figures on MT's website, the 165 kit is 7.1 secs and the 185 is 7.0 secs. So it's a fraction better, not that you'd notice it. It's when you hit 4500rpm you take off. So i'm well chuffed with my investment. If you got a spare £500 i'd recommend it.

does it actually stall or just feels like it will.

quick refrase of above - does it still pull from low speed when dawdling along in 2nd or 3rd, thats what I really like about mine.

After discussing this with MT today they say you need to give it slightly more gas when pulling away from a stationary position. This is because the cams operate better higher in the rev range.

Will take a bit of getting used to but, again haven't really noticed any loss of power low down.

I think we've posted about the 185 package before. If you look at the power and torque charts the 185 looses out on the 165 in the low end of the rev range. As you pointed out, its the cams that do it.

So, for 'real world' driving I have always rated the 165 kit as a better balance but could imagine that the 185, when on the boil hammering down a B-road must be a lot of fun

has your idle sorted itself mate? whats you mpg like now? i have 165 and have been in a few 185 cars now and i didnt realy notice much different low down either, just keep saying to myself dont do it your cars fine, im abit worried something might go wrong later on down the line or i wont like it and will want to go back! but on the other hand 185 bhp and a v.fast 0-100 time! and the pops and bangs! might have to be done!

Tell you what, it pops for fun!! Last thing Dave Moore from MT said is "enjoy the pops and bangs"! It pops a lot more than the 165 kit so, it may annoy the hell out of some people!

I've got used to it and sounds great if you slow down using the gears.

When I'm free end of Jan/ beg Feb, I'll pop up and demo it to you.

Well, yes and no!! I've learnt to give it slightly more gas when pulling away from a stationary position/reversing. Dave Moore at MT said it's the way these cams operate. However, I serviced it last week and feels better. You still need to give it slightly more gas than the 165 though.

I understand the position you're in because, I was thinking exactly the same about upgrading to the 185 kit. I just decided to do it and knew I could go back if I wanted to. MT gave me the original cams back, just incase you have any doubts.

Glad you've witnessd there isn't much loss low down as a lot of 165 owners think there's a big difference.

Others say the kit isn't made for the normal roads. Again, I disagree because the cams don't kick in till later on therefore, fuel consumption is slightly better round town.

To get the most out of this kit you can rev it high obviously within the speed limits. The beauty is that when you hit 4500rpm, it picks up speed very quickly (as the 0-100 figures suggest). This is great, I love it!!
