This is common on some early ford focus cars, the sister inlaw has a 2000 plate focus and it does exactly this, trouble is it does not put up any engine warning lights so does not leave any codes for ford to read, its not the only one as a mates focus does exactly the same again, I have checked electrical connections and made sure the battery teminals are tight, on the focus at the back of the engine is a crank breather pipe which splits or collapses, it had on this one, i renewed the pipe and thought it was cured, no was not that, been told to check the vehicle speed sensor on the gearbox also to remove and clean the throttle body, its hard to diagnose when its intermittent and not showing any fault codes.
