I've seen it mentioned in some thread. What's the deal? Replace the cigar lighter by the button and connect the wires? How about security, you still need to put the key on ignition before pushing the button? I'd like some more info on this one =)

You still need to put the key to position 2
You can put the button whereever you like and yes its a case of cutting into the wires up to the back of the ignition

Is it very difficult to install? I've really never actually touched any wiring inside there =S

To be fair it may be pointless, but how cool would it be pushing a button to start the engine....James Bond style!

looks just a case of joing to wires together tbh. hardest part is prob jus ruuning wire down to where you mount the button

I'll check my local ford dealer for the power button but i think i'd be better off buying it online and installing it myself knowing my dealer ...!! ermm another ques guys. i've seen the button light up. Is that connected to the dimmers? The tutorial shows connections to two wires. What are those for, is one of them to light it up and the other for its actual use?

Also, seen some other forums, they make the circuit diagrams look more complicated than just justting and joining wires =S seems like you need to connect some fuse?

do you mean the surround lighting up or the button itself? if your cig lighter surround lights up anyway you could prob just connect onto that wire. dont think the standard ford button does tho. think its differnect aftermarket kits that light up. i could be wrong tho as havnt seen one yet

so far I've noticed on other forums that one of the wires serves to light up the button as soon as the key is to position two and the other serves to complete the circuit once you press the button. The tutorial that you gave me the link for has some comments that it worked perfectly. My only concern is that some other online tutorials mention that you have to connect some fuse or so. Would it be a bad idea not to ... =S

Well seems like all i have to do is solder two wires. I've had a look at the ignition loom and the black-gray and green-yellow wires are in fact there are the farthest ends.

So now we buy the button and get our hands dirty xD

Oryt mate, yeh the diagrams correct, follow that and everything will work, had
mine fitted about 10months now. Get the button and bezel from zippy racing, now soldering is required and it's a nightmare to do in the switch due to were the pins are,but if u
email zippy and ask them tol solder the cables on for you, they will for a little extra cost, definatly worth it as it's the hardest part! Then i used scothlock for the connections onto the wiring loom!

Yeh there both exactly the same buddy, I put mine were the ciggy lighter is though Instead of were the boot button is. Just make sure you identify which cable is on Which pin after soldering!it's relativly simple, just take your time, and you'll be fine!!then get the illuminated gearstick and your console is transformed!!

how many connections are on the bottom of the button? i assume theres 3. 1 positive, 1 earth and 1 illumination? if only 2 connections then you prob cant due to fact once you press the button and the car starts that cuts power to the button?

im guessing that 2 pins are earth and two positive? one would be positive for the light and 1 earth for the light and the other 2 positive and earth for staring the car? i assume if you solder all 4 pins to just the two ignition wires thats what causes the light to go out once the car is running??

do you really need a relay for this as it just connects onto the exsisting wires and does the same job just without turning the key for a 3rd time?

apparently (from other forums) the ford button is designed to handle the current.

also
Quote:

As it stands, the guide Diego posted should be fine for your mk6. My diagram would be a good alternative for older models which use the barrel to directly switch the starter system rather than via an electronic module.

Apparently the relay is only needed for older models, but i might just do it so as to be safe.

yeah im putting it there but the hole there needs some widening. will get to work tomorrow. i checked with the meter about the pins. 1 and 6 make the LED light up. and there is connection between 3 and 4 when the button is pressed. but what's confusing me is that there is also connection between 1 and 4, 1 and 3 ...

i think i will go as follows :

From ignition to 1 and 3, stater goes to 4 and ground goes to 6. this should have the LED lit up as soon as the car is put on ignition and would stay on until i switch off =)

Final result is here. Apparently the ignition wire loses power after the car is switched on(avoids cranking the engine if the key is turned again) so if you use that as power to your LED,then it will switch off after the car is rollin, however if you take the time to find a wire which is live on ignition, you can easily branch that to pin 1, earth pin 6, and it will stay on until the car is switched off

I use it everytime unless im in a real hurry to start the car. usually i go to ignition, seat belt, button. I've only had it for some time so i cannot tell you if it wears out but i've talked to members on other forums who've had it for over a year. besides, if it wears out, the wiring would be done all you have to do is replace the button.

My freelander 2 has push button start. Basically the remote for locking/unlocking is just a rectangular block with no key at all. You just slide the block into a slot in the dashboard, hold the clutch down and press start. It's cool

well ermm yeah you just slide a pointed-shape block in the steering column and press start on the fez =P

jk. push start is always a nice gadget. some of my friends pulled my leg saying that's how the oldest cars used to operate but now everyone just wants to push it!
