When starting from cold if reverse is selected it struggles to go into gear and crashes when it does go in. If i select other gears such as 1st first then go into reverse it is fine. It seems to be that initial selection when cold. Does anyone else suffer from this and why is it caused and possible solutions?

Car is 57 place Fiesta st 17k miles and is still under warranty.

They all do it, don't worry about it, nothing you can do

Check out the handbook, it recommends you depress the clutch down for a second or so before selecting reverse.

Mines bad to...

Also I find you have to be at a complete standstill to get the thing in reverse, had a 'hairy' moment the other day as a bus was apporaching down a narrow street and the car wouldnt go into reverse fast enough -crunch- bad times

Its because of the lack of a syncromesh (dont ask coz I dont know but without it you get that crunch lol) in reverse. I and a lot of other members also find putting it into 3rd and then selecting reverse helps

I never tried putting into 3rd before Reverse - it works beautifully! Before that i used to depress the clutch twice, worked majority of the time but sometimes it still crunched!

My Fiesta did it all the time, put the car in 1st gear before selecting reverse and then the input and output shafts in the gearbox will be spinning at the same speeds

I always put it into first one or twice and then reverse, and as the others say, it works fine. I was worried when my car used to do it, but it's not an issue

Ford are aware of a second gear synchro problem on some ib5 boxes, from what i can gather if you drive in second gear up to about 3000 rpm and let your foot off the accelerator some jump out of gear. I could find out for definate if i see my mate whos a techy at ford.

Or, just let the clutch out a little, and then re-engage. Try reverse again, wont scratch then.

Mine never crunches, just won't go in until I lift the clutch a little, but found the same with a couple of cars
