Simple question.. will it fit a Fiesta, and does it give a better cruising ratio?

Nothing that would be easy. Possibly a 5 speed from a mondeo which will have longer ratios?

Why half an st

Simple answer: Do not fit the ST170 gear box!!!!

The getrag six speed box is quite simply awful and is one of the complaints that many ST170 owners have, it's heavy and clunky to use and the gearbox wouldn't fit anyway.

Stick with the standard IB5 as it's perfect for your car, forget cruising in your Fiesta as it was meant for back road blasts!

I have taken it easy this week just to see how much it affects mpg, and to be honest it has probably got worse it anything. Not to mention the fact that it has bored me to tears.
Forget the 6 speeds and take it for a real drive

Trust me, the box from the ST170 is so horrid to use! It would make you cringe and want to drive your fiesta into a ditch!

I was talking to someone about the ST170 gearbox, said it was a very good gearbox and will take alot of power through it

It will handle lots of power, but it's horrid to use

ST170 box is appalling and it wouldn't fit anyway!

If you want better cruising MPG then change the final drive ration in your gearbox.

You can purchase revised drives from some places as the IB5 is used in a few different cars and you could purchase a standard drive.

Surely its going to cost more than you will save to do though?

I'm not sure without spending hours researching which one but it's either the current Fiesta 1.6TDCi or the Econetic final drive.

The ST is 3.89:1 and the DSL is 3.37:1.

It would affect your 0-60 time (though I doubt by much as you'd be able to do well over 60MPH in second gear) and drop your revs by about 500RPM

Depends on how much it cost!

Car will be doing about 1200 miles a month, so even going from 30 to 35 mpg would save £20 a month
If a 6 speed did fit, Ive seen the mtx75s going for about £150, so it would pay for itself in half a year, and I would have an IB5 to sell on!

But if its gonna cost £ks worth of custom ratios then as you say, it wouldnt be worth it.

Part Ex'ing it is not an option as we've only just bought it!, shes only just part ex'd her Clio 197 for it.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I'm pretty darn sure that the MTX75 is a 5 speeder only!

Indeed you are 100% there Dave, the MTX-75 is only a 5 speed box..

("75" apparently referring to "the distance in millimeters between the main and lay shafts" tho)

It's not so much the cost of the final drive, I would imagine that to be way less than £100 it's the cost of stripping the gearbox to install it.

MTX-75 won't fit and has the same ratios as the IB5, it's just a stronger box.

MT"X" i think refers to the longitudinal fitted engine. I think MT75 is the standard horizontal engine. But i could be wrong

I am wrong. Its the other way round

What an awesome second post

Well there are logitudinal and transverse directions for engines and gearboxes.

Transverse mountings indicate a rear wheel drive car, such as the sierras, granadas and cosworths

Transverse is front wheel drive. Gearbox mounted to the side
In line or longitudinal is RWD. Gearbox mounted to the rear

The "X" stands for transverse,
As there was the MT-75 (Sierra, Granada, Transit RWD) and the MTX-75 for FWD applications. (Escort RS2000 & Diesel etc etc)

I was under the impression that it stood for "M" Manual "T" Tranmission "X" Transverse mounted "7" 700nm Torque capability "5" 5 forward gears

But I could be wrong

Sorry, my bad...

As I've said before in the post, you might as well get a cruising diesel version of the Fiesta if you're worried about fuel consumption...

A fiesta diesel won't be much of an option. Especically when Georgina starts the auto test type events

The Fiesta Diesel doesn't cruise that well though either. I have seriously considered fitting the Econetic final drive to reduce my cruising revs.
