make sure your engine is cold as if its hot the water burns off to quick and leaves marks everywhere!

Damp cloth is all that's needed to clean under the bonnet sometimes for the oily bits and old rag with a bit of WD40 brings it up a treat. GT85 sprayed on and wiped over is good too and smells great when it warms up :-)

my dad's got a 1993 ford laser recently and he managed to get the engine clean with a cloth, a spray and a good amount of patience

I've seen someone use a karcher pressure washer on a 6v and it was ok Not sure I'd dare do that.
