Hi guys,

My names Steve and I live in Australia. I recently purchased a Ford Fiesta 1.6 Litre Duratec model. It a 2006 model and has a very low 17 000 miles (27 000kms).

The car is immaculate but i have noticed there is an engine tapping/ knocking sound. Seems to be coming from the top of the motor. Its especially audible when the car is cold and as revs right the tapping sound gets faster and faster - it still makes the sound when the engines warm although its much harder to hear. Its mainly from 1000 - 3500 revs

With such low miles what could it be? i doubt the tappets or anything could be worn with such low mileage - i have checked the oil and that is fine.

Another quick question - I cant find anywhere inside the car to "lock" the doors - there is simply no button or switch - help?

Cheers guys,

Steve

Im sure the engine knocking is a problem that alot of people will know, happens in alot of cars...its at the tip of my tongue but quite cant get it, people on here will know though .

The lock question tho, just push in the door handles, that locks the car from the inside!

thanks for the help with the locks!

The knocking/ tapping concerns me but the car is far to new for it to be anything terminal i would have thought (big end bearing, tappets etc).

I bought it off an old lady with only 27 000 kms and it presents like new.

Here is a youtube video of the noise - i hope someone can tell me what it could be?

Injectors can be noisy, but sounds a little tappety to me, i would try changing the oil and filter as a first step. Its hard to diagnose tapping sounds unless you can actually get to the car, we use a proper stethascope at my cousins garage and can find out better where noises are coming from.
These engines need the correct oil, is the oil pressure ok, does the oil light go straight out. How many oil changes has it had, i know you said its low mileage but its still a 2006 car and should have the oil replaced every 12500 miles or every year, is the oil filter restricted ?.

what oil should it have? 5W 30?

i think il get a service done soon just to be sure, its last service was a year ago / 3000 kms as the owner barely drove it...

the oil still looks quite clean though - i just have no idea how the tappets could be gone with such low kms and an owner who would have never thrashed it

5w30 is the correct grade over here in the uk, check your handbook for your particular climate, can you not take the car to a local dealers and ask them to listen to the noise, as i have said its hard to diagnose tapping sounds.
Its also hard to hear because of wind noise on your camera, are you sure its coming from the top of the engine, get a long screwdriver or something similar and place one end where you think the noise is coming from and the handle part to your ear, then move the screwdriver to different places on the engine, if the noise gets louder at a certain point your getting closer to the source, be carefull of moving and or rotating parts.
