I've got a friend in the know regarding this type of thing,

If you get tints, the front side tints are meant to let 75% light through. I cant remember what the front is again but I will double check with what Chris says. Any windows after the driver and passengers seats can be as Chris said as dark as you want them.

Also depending on how bad they are depends on how much its going to cost you from the Boys in blue.. It can even mean points, again im not so sure on the finer details but I find out.

To answer the MOT question, the MOT stations don't have the kit to check the tints as its to expensive, so that's why they usually pass any cars no matter how dark your tints are.

Cars are usually supplied with a slight tint in the windows when you get them from the manufacturer so if you want to be squeaky clean id leave the tints off the front and front side windows. I do like to see some cars with a slight tint as they do look great. Too much in my opinion looks chavy and does unfortunately entice the the boys in Blue to give you a dig.

Been stopped twice in the RS by the boys in blue and they have not mentioned my tints, just luck of the draw
Generally you will only get points for reallllllllllly dark limo tints on the front
You may be asked to remove them at the side of the road
It may also effect insurance paying out

Not effected my decision to leave mine on though

mot station can fail a car on windscreen tints if they want to be picky without a light tester. if they feel it is too dark, they will claim it as an obstruction larger tha 25mm blocking the screen. just like some have failed cars for leaving satnavs in because they twats

Yeah some of the garages can be Difficult but on the other side, Range rovers and Freelanders are being sold with illegal tints on them from reputable garages so depends on where you go..

Right also on that ive really got to apologies to Chris..

Chris mate you were spot on with the side window tints, it is 70% light that's meant to get through, and it is 75%at the front.

I also found out that 0-30% Light getting through the tints means 3 penalty points and a £60 FINE.

30-45% Means a fine only..

anything less the boys in blue will tell you to take them off and leave it at that.

Also was sent this in an email from my mate: ( a bit of an anorak)

Normal plain float glass has a rather greenish tint when viewed from the edge. This is due to an Iron Oxide content of about 0.1% and a mixture of Ferric and Ferrous Ions of 20%. Such glass of about 4mm thickness, (Standard thickness Automotive Glass), allows approximately 90% of light in the visible spectrum to pass through it.

This basicly meens a standard car window already got a slight tint in them, so worth thinking about if when choosing your tints if your wanting to stay on the right side of .

So most windows will have a 10% 'tint' already

Apparently so...

Although it will vary depending on the make of car. Remember not 100% light will get threw a window in the first place, so with additives and the plastic film in-between the layers of glass in laminated windows it will already be less than 100% light getting threw, so a very light tint might bring it down below the limit.

I got some wind deflectors, they make it look just as good IMO without getting the windows tinted and they aren't illegal..
