Ive had a quick look and can't see if this has been done before. But I'm interested to find the 'real world' fuel figures. I think ford show it as 49mpg on a run.

How many miles do you usually get out of a full tank before the light comes on and what kind of driving style?

I currently gave a 2003 non turbo Subaru impreza. If I fill the tank to the brim £56 on average, I get about 240 miles before the light comes back on, I have to drive like an old lady to get it this good. If I put my foot down I get closer to 190 miles. Bearing in mind the scooby is 130bhp AWD non turbo. I really need the fiesta to improve on this if I am to buy one!!!

You are realistically looking at between 20 - 32mpg if you are doing short journeys and up to 40+mpg but i don't know how Lozzy got that

I get between 200 - 250 miles per tank and it cost me about £52 to fill up, my worst was 170 but i had my foot down most of the time

If your worried about fuel consumption don't get a fez Have you thought about the zs? 90% of the fun for a fraction of the cost.

It is possible to get good mpg by driving very carefully but the st will egg you on.
Most people get between 250-300 out of a tank. The fiesta will be better than the scobby as it weighs less. Doesn't waste as much energy through the awd system.

Even my focus will do 40+mpg but i had to sit behind a lorry to do it

This is disappointing if I'm honest. It looks like the fiesta will be no better than my scooby

Fords figures look like they are purely fiction!!!

In my ZS I normally do 130kmh (80mph) on the motorway and get about 35.7mpg.
For the last tank I did 100-110kmh (62-68mph) on the motorway and I got 42.7mpg
If I went even slower and stayed behind truck I reckon I could get that even higher.

If I'm honest, although ford quote 49mpg I was expecting 40mpg which equates to around 360 miles to a tank!!! I drove from caernarfon to Lowestoft a few days ago and got 315 miles out of the scoody 34mpg. But it was speed limits at all times and no hard driving.

If your driving carefully on the motorway there's nothing stopping you from getting close to 50. If I'm driving carefully I can get 39mpg even over short distances but that is driving as economically as possible.

I use to get 34mpg normal conditions, bit of boot sometimes

Got 41mpg when I changed at 2000 revs, that was a full tank over a mixture of driving

I did mainly country roads

i do average about 60 miles a week through country roads/town centers and main roads.

I use momentum 99 i can drivelike a granny mixing it up with a bit of boy racer and i get on average 32mpg all in a week.

I fill up once a week £40 for a full tank.

I must be a really hard driver!!! Lol I only do 3 miles to work tho and come home again on my dinner so 12 miles a day in 3 mile runs which don't help!!! Engine hardly gets warm, I try not to rag it but sometimes it can't be helped anyway averaging 29mpg not brill but truthfully many 2.0 cars are about the same!!!

2,500 rpm is best for fuel economy on a motorway, anything slower and ur actually using more fuel than u need!!!

Buy an oil burner my friends!!!!!

You can't own an ST and worry about MPG. Just drive like you normally would and enjoy owning what will become a legendary Ford in the years to come!

ST = Seriously Thirsty.

I did say i drove like a granny and sometimes a boy racer

I've done since owning the car 1300 miles and spent nearly £400 on petrol.

i can't complain it's doing better then my GT-four of which i got 14mpg, over a month i'd spend £240.

My work van has a setting to put it on where it shows the MPG as your driving, so 22...20...18...15...12..etc Take foot off throttle and it also comes up with 99.9mpg!

Managed 45 mpg on the way home from work this evening, I was driving like a complete Granny though, didn't go over 50 mph!

Total journey was 20 miles, mostly on decentish A roads, and a few miles of town driving. I doubt I can keep it up though!

thats no different than saying i might as well have bought a fast car rather than ragging around a little fiesta.

at the end of the day i would describe the fiesta as "nippy" i have a bike if i want speed, at the end of the day i was looking for an all rounder, a family car for me, wife and daughter + some shopping. it has to be fun to drive and a nice place to be in. and in this day and age of economy, it has to return reasonable mpg. i have a family to support and a house to renovate. i don't intend to drive at 50 everywhere, but i'm not going to be bouncing it the rev limiter thacking the hell out of it, especially with precious cargo lol

I think its an ok car if you have a family, I've had my two nieces in the back in car seats and it was no hassle to get them in or out because the doors are so wide

On the petrol consuption front, I've been driving a bit more sensible this week and the 1st bar on my fuel gauge (pre-facelift dash) went after 41miles! That is excellent for me as they normally dissapear after only 25-30 miles

I've had the car less than a day now. But drove the 100 miles home along the A12 from Brentwood to Lowestoft. I zeroed all the counters before I left. The computer showed 41.9mpg compared to 28mpg in my scooby. Even off the computer is a bit out I think I'll be more than happy. Driving like a granny is no problem for me with little one in the car, the good thing is, it's nippy enough for a blast around the back roads when I'm on my own

Glad you went for the in the end, it's a great little car and if you drive it right you can get a good fuel return. I don't get above 31mpg because i do short journeys

So, what's the best way to drive to get high mpg?

I've got a new job starting in 4 weeks and realised last night that fuel may cost upto £200 for 800 miles a month, so I'm wondering whether I should've took this job now!

Should I do an oil change to help or not?

drive like a granny
change gear before 2000rpm, dont break suddenly if you can help it
carry less weight in the car, check your tyre pressure regularly

i dont think changing before 2k helps, its just the rate of acceleration that makes the differnece. change at 2.5k./3k, just dont boot it. 1st gear to get the wheels moving, accelerate in 2nd for abit, get upto speed in 3rd, then straight into 5th

Cool - I'll give it a go. What about the oil change - will it improve mgp or not?

if its not been done for a while, it will certainly help ease the pressure on your car and make it run smoother, but wont really imporove mpg.

Just be very gentle and smooth with throttle and brake inputs. Change between 2/2.5k revs.
Anticipate whats ahead. If there is a traffic light just turned red for example take your foot off the throttle and coast up to the lights. If it's a pedestrian crossing they may turn green again by the time you get there so no need to stop and move off again. Which uses more fuel. Ever wondered why lorry drives keep rolling up to the very last moment? If they can keep moving and not stop it uses less fuel.

Don't hit the 'snooze' on your alarm so you get up late for work and have to boot it to get there on time.

Don't most hire companies take the disc out? It's to stop people nicking them and selling them on.

The should leave a copy in the car incase you get pulled over by the police.

Surely it can't be right that they can supply a car that you're going to get done for driving if you're spotted? It is a separate offence to not paying your road tax, to not actually display it correctly, and people do get done for this. A couple of weeks ago there was a bit in the paper about a woman that got fined for not displaying her tax disc properly after the police noticed that it had fallen onto the dashboard and wasn't attached to the bottom left hand corner of the windscreen as it should be.

Its a known practice to remove it, I would always ask for it, or have it written that they will pay any fines recieved

it's a legal requirement to display the original at all times, the car shouldn't be on the road if it isn't there. it is the registered keepers responsibility to make sure it is displayed. i'm used literally hundreds of hire cars and never known one not to have tax displayed. not doubting your comment at all, just pointing out that it's a bad practice.

I had seen it on one of the police camera style programs. They had pulled one over and after the police contacted the hire company the hire company said it was standard procedure to remove them to stop thefts.

yeah as micky said it's not against the law.

If they are a fleet car they don't need to display anything other then the VIN number and registration.

police can use the ANPR camera to detect it'sa fleet regestered car and there for all cars are by bulk insured and taxed with the DVLA.

this applys for personalised number plates too, fleets can have minimum of 3 letters and 1 number.

as apposed to standard car where now i beleive the legal requirment is in this order 2 letters, 2 numbers, three letters.

reason being is a fleet car has it's on regestration policy like alan sugar his car is regestered as Sugar 1.

I beleive fleet/ hire cars are the only ones that can get away with it as neither driver will be the regestered owner or have his/her own insurance on that vehicle.

Taxi's, or any other commercial vehicles must show tax and have valid insurance.

Normal cars can have very few letters/numbers on the numberplate (unless im confusing what you mean with something else?)

Seen a car with BT 1 as number plate
Also you get the numberplates F1,A1,M1

well apparently cars after 2001 have to obide by DVLA standards with number plate having a maximum of so many letters and numbers you can't have any numbers after the two letters that are lower then when your car was regestered on the road.

However pre 2001 it'sa different matter with what numbers and letter you can use as long as the numbers again don't clash with when it was first regestered on the road.

all these number plates like F1 or ST1G were brought long before 2001 by large companies that now sell them on to people like you and I.

they are completely legal to use longs the number doesnt conflict with the year your car was regestered.

This is why the dvla are trying to crack down on these companies cause they are selling illeagal number plates to innocent customers who stick it on their car only to find out the number plate will match an 1992 escort cosworth but not their 2004 focus C-max.

Fleet cars are another matter they legally can create their own regestry company send all the regestration plates off to DVLA it's authorised and regestered in the DVLA and police database these cars can be called SWE45 SWE46 etc etc.

only know all this as my dad had his name as 'Colin' on his car when he owned his business 3 years ago. he was pulled over few times about it mind you but all legal.

Nah thats not right- the only thing you can't do is make your car look newer like me putting an 07 plate on my 06 car. You can make it look older if you wish (05 plate on my 06)

Not sure on the other requirments; generally i always though it was either A12 BCD
or AB12 CDE
but then as adam says i've seen one's with one number and 3 letters or 1 number and 1 letter- all sorts!

The only thing you defo can't do to your car is make it look newer than it is

Yup, the first bar (if you've got a pre-facelift with the digital fuel gauge) takes much longer to go down than any of the others.

OMG YES!

it does i always thought was my car being wierd takes ages to get to half a tank.

soon as i get there it looks like from there on it's just pouring out the exhaust needle goes down so quick.

I think it is telling lies though i was on 1/4 tank filled it up usually it's about 42 quid before the click last week filled it up.

£36 pound it clicked on fall tank.

just to put an end to this discussion, i was in the dvla sorting the new wifes change of name yesterday, so i asked the question about displaying tax on lease and hire cars. they said it's an offence to have any vehicle on the road without displaying a valid tax disc, regardless of what it is used for. they also said they would be very interested to know of any companies using the practice of photocopied tax or not displaying tax.

hope this clears this one up

seems they were being naughty when doing this then. i know a design engineer who used to draw up his own tax discs and get them printed before the whole system was computerised.

i've noticed my fuel economy going up every day as now my works moved. I have to drive along quite a long section of road with average 50mph speed camera's to get there. When i first started my mpg was 28.9 but its now gone up to 29.5 since wednesday and its a longer journey too lol

I've got another 580 km out of 40 litres fuel.

I have a question though...
The Fiesta has a 44 litre tank, and im filling up with 40 litres. Does that mean there is 4 litres still in the tank? Or is most of that taken up by air/unused space in the tank?

do you fill up when you are literally empty? (0 miles)
if not there's probably some in the tank still

i have a pre facelift so I have the digital guage, bars...
When I have a small half bar at the bottom the light comes on, but I usually fill up once the last bar dissapears...but when I fill up then its only ever 39-40 litres. So im wondering since the fiesta tank is 44L how much is gonna be in there, I doubt the full 4 litres but I doubt there is nothing too

I expect it would actually be the full 4 litres. daddy2Couls experience sounds unfortunate, but anything I've read says that when the very last bars goes you should have roughly 30 miles left. That ties in with my own experience going to FITP in 2007 when I was worried I was going to run out of petrol when the last bar had gone and the local garages near to where I was setting off from weren't yet open. I drove about ten miles to the next services and it took just over 42 litres to fill.

to be fair, mine had said 38 miles to empty for about 4 days, but i know in that time i had covered at least 20 miles, last time i refilled it said 25 to empty. luckily it ran out on my drive, point up a slight slope, i think it was just pushing it too far to much lol
