Hi Guys, new member to the site, but visit a lot. Need some help. Just checked my oil level on my car an it is really low. So just ran over to Tescos as it is around the corner from me. Picked up some 5W-30 as I know this is the correct type. But I have just got home and noticed it is fully synthetic instead of part synthetic.

Question. Can I use the fully synth stuff in my ST or do I need to take it back?

Car is a 58 plate and has done 21000 miles.

EDIT: I am unsure what oil is in the car at present. I haven't changed or topped up the oil since I brought the car 14 months ago. (I know I am overdue a service.)

I checked the oil with the engine cold and it was barely on the dipstick. I need to run the engine for a few mins from what I have read now. I do not know how to check oil level apart from dipstick. Someone has said I should not mix oils. I would drain what is in there at present, but I do not know how to do that either...

The car should be on a level service and probably been off for 20 minutes or so...
Remove Dipstick... Wipe clean... Re-insert Dipstick and wait 5 seconds... Pull dipstick and inspect... Repeat tell desired level is reached...

Seeing as youve bought castrol it should say A1 on the front of the container or the back it should say Complies too ford WSS-M2C913-A

5w30 is the correct number although its best too check the oil complies too it as there are A1 A2 A3 and A4 dependent on car manufacter... Ford is A1 though

please note 5w30 is a very thin oil and is not easily viewed on a dipstick... take care... also between adding up each time give it 1 min

You can use either fully or semi synthetic oil but I would not really advise mixing the two. Usually the ST uses semi-synthetic as this is what Ford approves so I would try and get hold of that instead, it is a safer bet.
Draining the oil is easy but if you are not comfortable with that then probably best not to.
Get the service done soon mate but just top her up with 5W 30 semi synthetic in the meantime
