Thanks all!

SparK - I didnt im afraid, but if your thinking of earthing a circuit just connect to earth wiring to anything metal on the chassis (bolt or nut etc..)

Wiggz, I'd luv to see pics of your conversion if you have any mate, i'm lookin' at doing a full red LED one for mine so I might have a few questions for you soon

so how did you know which wire was the live feed for the dimmers? I would also be tempted to put on a switch for this, I'm not sure I would want it on all of the time if I get this

OK, managed to get some better pics using a better camera still not great, but it allowed better ISO and shutter options at least.

I think I may try and adjust the angle of the led's so they light up more of the gear stick rather than the handbrake/seatbelt clips area that it goes right now

Yeah, it's really so subtle that I dont notice it most of the time, it's only in pitch blackness you take a look down and see it

no, not really. The LED's are fixed at the top of tube like recesses, so i'm thinking I may try a bit of heat from a heat gun and some manual manipulation to alter the angle.. i'm not confident about the result of this though.. so may not bother.

Lucky guess mate

lol, not really, I actually found out by doing a bit of lucky googling. There was a topic on wiring in neon footwell lighting into a Focus, they said to tap into the Orange/Blue wire behind the switch to get a switched live to the footwell neons. I also found a website topic that mentioned pinouts 58L and 58R for the sidelights in an 07 Fiesta used for wiring a towball. On the inside of the connector block I could see that the Orange/Blue wire linked to pin 58L/R, so connected to that one.
