so picture the scene - off out so jumped into my lovely fez turned the key ignition turns over and then nothing.

turned everything off and tried again and now the ignition doesnt turn over at all!!! when i turn the ignition on all i get is the airbag light, oil light and the door open light. no battery light and nothing at all happens (except the radio goes off as it should when you start the car)

battery seems fine - was running lovely yesterday but not now. i have disconnected the battery overnight to reset the system and will try in the morning but was wondering if anyone else had any suggestions? its too dark to check fuses etc but again was going to try this in the morning.

any help would be appreciated as i know ford will try and rip me off to fix an immobiliser

Do you hear the fuel pump kicking in? If so then the immobiliser is fine (has been deactivated with your key), also check to see if the red light top middle of speedo is flashing.

Check battery voltage with either a multimeter OR a.) hold RESET button on left stalk, while holding turn on to ignition 2, wait, scroll through menu options with reset until you see battery voltage... should be above 12v with engine off, and 14v+ with engine on

What happens when you try to crank the engine over, any ticking or dimming of dash or...?

More details are needed mate.

when my dad had a similar problem it was the battery. I dont know what exactly the car is doing though. Dad's car used to do jerky stuff when you turn from position 2 to 3 on ignition barrel

literally nothing happens at all - i have no flashing immobiliser light at all and the majority of the lights on the dash do not illuminate when you turn the ignitions (eg.start etc) i dont have any displays on the digital readouts petrol/time/mileage its all blank.

I have checked all the stated fuses for the ignition and engine management side of things but they are all fine. i can hear something kicking in when i turn the key but nothing else happens doesnt even try to turn the starter motor.

Check your battery voltage with a multimeter

update -

battery is putting out a normal 12v and after much turning of keys and playing around with bits i have managed to figure out that the fuses and relays are all ok, the fuel pump is kicking in when you turn the key and what i am guessing is the maf sensor (attached to the throttle body) is also kicking in.

i have tried jump starting it and bump starting it and both have no effect. im thinking possibly either immobiliser (though i dont know what it actually stops - ignition?????) or ECU

i have got a mate hopefully coming round later to put a fault reader on it and see if it comes back with anything

Sounds just like starter not kicking in... take a jump lead from battery directly too the starter and see if it turns over...

Immobiliser wouldn't stop the dash LCD bit lighting up, and the other symptoms you describe

tbh it's sounding more and more like the wire in the back of your speedo has come loose, as the car won't start without it connected.

the fault reader came back with nothing, checked all the standard codes and couldnt find anything. He has come to the same conclusion as st07 and thinks the actual dash LCD unit may be knackered, which is why it wont start.

Im going to have a go at removing it tonight just to check for any loose cables, anyone know how much one of these is likely to cost?
