Filters are a bit of a preference, there are no real rules to them. I've taken off any filters I used to use because they were cheap and made the image quality worse. UV filters can help protect the front element but you need to spend decent money on them to make sure they dont degrade the image. Hoya are supposed to be good but I haven't really looked into them. Polarizing filters are useful as they can take away reflections. Watch this. Stupid music but it covers the basics. I personally dont use any filters but I'll planning on getting a decent cpl for car photography. Hope that helps some what

5 vids are 350mb, rest are photos, most are pants but today cant be bothered to pick through and upload only the best. Got a GT5 time trial to win. PS3 on now
