You know what
Make your son or daughter buy their own first car
Makes them realise the value of money and take more care in their first car
I bought every car I own and you know what, touch wood, I aint had an accident to date!
You appreciate it more when you work hard for it!

True that my friend! paid every penny outright on my ST and its my pride and joy (along with my drums)

the reason for this is because in the states the car is insured not the drivers

i will honestly admit this on here

after passing my test for the firs time and the first few weeks of driving i was a very un-easy guy i didnt like taking passengers as i was to be quite honest scared of driving with the added bonus of people talking to me.

few months passed a completely different story i got a false sense of being able to handle the car i picked up people thrashed the car around i got the need for speed.

It's at that point is when new drivers are at their worst as the over-confidence makes you take more risks.

i was a boy racer, theres no doubt about it in my little peugeot 106 1.1.

having had a few near misses, and some serious wake up calls i realised i had to stop before i crashed. so experience taught me to drive slower and analyse hazards better and actually make reasonable and correct decisions like shall i over take on this straight and taking a bend at so and so speed.

it wasn't until after a year of driving i began to calm down and drive most places about 40-50mph so it didn't hurt my pocket.

Then i got the GT-four which honestly again same case steady driver but having a faster car i actually began to appreciate it i thought well having this power i should be more responsible for how i drive, no idea why that thought came into my head.

i always knew when i was driving like an idiot i was driving like an idiot but it's an adrenaline rush. imagine getting onto a roller-coaster for the first time ride it and your buzzing? ride it more and more you loose the placebo effect and it gets boring and this is exactly the same with driving the longer you drive the more you become used it all and gain experience.

So these young drivers driving like idiots in some respect yes they are idiots but the other you have to say well wait i like putting my foot down and i enjoy it, its very hard not to do something you enjoy.

The fact that you can restrict a car is a genius idea.

low insurance and potentially could prevent a high speed accidence and most importantly deaths on the road.

i would quite happily take this with open arms with the fiesta ST and then when im 25 unlock the cars full potential.

i've saved myself 100's on insurance but i still have the X-factor of driving an ST

Sounds like a great idea but that means all new drivers would have to have a brand new car? Not gonna work very well

Sounds like there are way too many issues with this, though we'd probably need to know more.

If the top speed is limited to 70mph for example, people could still speed in residential zones etc. It also doesn't address the issue of the car's power - it's not always about the speed, sometimes it's how long it takes to get to that speed. For example an inexperienced driver trying to get from 0-30, 40, 50 etc as fast as possible (with all his chavvy mates in the car) is going to be concentrating far too much on the car's speed and not enough on the potential hazards around him...

(Yes I know that is a very stereotypical view and I realise not everyone is an idiot and/or chav when they are young )

that will be good if it has setting to the speed limits!

but if parents can set it at 40mph it will be dangerous!

whats it gonna do if someone undoes their seatbelt cut the engine or just beep? new cars beep anyway when seatbelts are not worn!

prob wont start unless you have the belt on and foot on the clutch like it does in my focus.
