mountune are allowed to use the ford software to map the ECU

they dont chip it they reflash it for the 165 and 185 but the MR200 is chipped

difference between a re-map and chipping is the following

re-map is re-directing actions made by the ECU you can tell the ECU to do things or ignore them

chipping is completely by-passing the ECU's functions and placing a different CPU in the car often this has pre-loaded information or mappings made and tested.

Re-maps are specific to your car as your using your own ECU if you wanted to get a new engine like a V8 you'd need to get the ECU chipped.

this also applies if you want some big power and some big changes to your car.

i have brought a Cosworth chipped ECU for my duratec engine because the original ECU is not compatible with some of the maps required to run the cosworth performance pistons and camshafts.

as the timings are something like .3453 of a second faster then the normal ECU CPU can handle.
