It's an age old debate just as old as the history of the motor car itself ... some say to only check the oil when it's cold .. and others say it must be at operating temperature.
Either way really isn't going to make that much difference, but the argument for checking whilst at operating temp is that the oil is at optimum condition while the car is in use and at operating temperature (ie: 99.9% of the time) and has thinned to it's correct state once it has reached this point.
How long is your car engine cold for? .. not very long at all, as such it is this if anything, that gives a false reading (although it's negligible either way) .. we are talking small amounts here.

Robjh - You are correct in what you say. It really doesn't matter, so long as the car is on a level surface and you allow it to settle, the reading will be pretty much the same.

Just changed the gearbox oil in my dads x350 Jag, oil at dealers was £29 a litre, gearbox holds 6 litres, had to check the oil at a temp of between 30 and 50 degrees, so i suppose it depends on what you want to do, I always check my engine oil when its cold maybe on a morning when it has drained back into the sump.

Tom, roughly, in mm, how much over the maximum is your oil level?
If it's over 5mm, I would get some drained. If it's only up to 5mm, it will be fine and no damage will occur.

I'll have a check, as I have no ramps I'd have to get it to a garage. Hopefully they wouldn't charge much to just drain a little oil?

It's a bit of an arse to drain as you need to drain a little, put the plug back in, check the level, drain abit more etc etc.
I'd say you'd be looking at about £15 or thereabouts.
Put two bricks in front of hte front tyres, drive on them and you'll get access to the plug easily. Undo the plug (13mm), undo it all the way BUT don't pull the plug from the hole, sort of hold a bit of pressure so that the oil dribbles out. Get a margerine container and drain into that.

I always manage to change the oil without jacking the car up at all ... and Iv'e got Eibach's installed ..
