well it was pretty much the top of the disptick i.e. about 4mm above the max mark
drove a 60 mile round trip today and it was fine though

Where is the drain plug? also as Micky said won't it be impossible/ VERY messy trying to put the plug back in with the oil flowing out?

1:) Take the car for a drive until it reaches normal operating temperature

2:) Park the car on a flat surface and turn it off

3:) Wait 5 minutes for all the engine oil to drain back into the sump

4:) Then (and only then!) .. check the oil level

You would be amazed at how many people do such a simple thing so wrong, ... they park on a slope, check the oil when the car is cold etc ..

If it's only a little bit over the maximum mark and the car is running fine then leave it alone

If it's a lot over the maximum mark just release the sump plug a touch and let some oil drain out a bit at a time before reaching the correct level.

you must do it different in australia m8, over here its recommended to let the engine cool down first before checking the oil, or check it on a cold engine, as hot engine oil gives a false reading.

Burn - If it's only 4mm over the maximum mark, don't worry. Drive the car as normal and come next oil change, put it on the right mark.

ANything over 1cm over the max then you would need to drain a little, but honestly, leavie it as is, it won't do any damage.

P.s. When checking oil level (Not when your changing it), put car on a level surface and pull dipstick out. Clean, replace and THEN check level. Do NOT check when it is warm.

It can over pressurise the engine, which puts gaskets, pistons and seals under more load than usual.

Will go and check the oil again in a minute now it's all settled down and the car hasn't been used for a while

Click the link above mate. It's on the rear of the engine, at the bottom. 13mm.

5w30 oil is that thin that if you want an exact reading leave it tell cold, if you want a rough reading i.e. just checking how low it is. 10 minutes is fine
