they can call in a replacement driver. i believe it doesnt have to be their test driver although it would of course make sense to use him

Can't see Hamilton leaving McLaren, he's been with them since he was 10. Even if he did, I can't see him going from McLaren to Mercedes, the only way for Hamilton would be Red Bull (unlikely) or Ferrari to replace Massa IMO.

Be a strange season if it were true. DiResta with Button would be awesome though, Di Resta just needs a better car IMO.

Ah yes, good point. It just seems too strange to be true. I could sort of understand if it were Button - Mercedes have Ross Brawn, and Jenson was the star driver during Brawn GP's one season. It seems strange for Hamilton to appear to go backwards this early in his career.
