I'm glad you're saying this Rugby.  Judging by some dramatic comments in another thread regarding ESP or the lack thereof I've come to wonder how on earth I'm still walking and breathing having been driving 18 years without not only ESP but also ABS up until the ST...

If I upgrade to the facelift ST I will be getting it fitted, Takes two seconds to turn it off if you want a bit of fun. I'd much rather it cut in than be sitting in a field after taking a greasy bend too quick.

I totally agree with all the good comments about it, and yeah if you can afford it get it, turn it off if you don't want it or if the weather's ok (that's what i'm gonna do - bad weather only!), if you can't afford it, don't worry about it!

I've never really bothered about driving aids, as they cause too much reliance upon them. I learnt to drive in a proper car (Ford Escort MKII ) which slapped you on the wrists if you didn't treat it with respect. If you're going to go fast into a greasy bend in any car, ESP or not, then you deserve to loose a bit of no claims bonus or a few teeth. Drive the car sensibly with respect ( not slow) and you don't need ABS/TCS/ESP.

As someone has already said, it is there for safety. I wouldn't buy a st with esp and say "I've got esp now I can go round that corner like lightning" I would drive like I do normally and if there happen to be an incident that got a bit out of hand one day, hopefully the esp would help out.

I don't think anyone is arguing that you can't drive without ESP, or ABS, or seatbelts, or airbags and still live. But why would you not choose to add more security if you have the option? I don't get it?

Well I'm not arguing about all the other safety features you mention and as a matter or fact I would not climb in any vehicle in which I could not buckle up a seat belt (even in the back of course).
No my argument, only really applies to ESP.
If I were certain that ESP did add active security then I agree with you - why not get it, no matter what its cost it and I do think that some cars really do need it - I would have loved to have it in my old tail-happy Pug 309. What I am saying is that I don't think the needs it. I have really tried thrashing and provoking the ST driving silly (not on open roads before anyone wonders) both on wet low-grip situations and dry surfaces and this car simply lets you get away with pretty much anything. The dynamics of the vehicle has been really well thought-out by Ford engineers so my opinion is simply that ESP is not worth the extra cost. In my opinion its availability (standard or as an option) on the ST is simply there to give Ford salesmen a possibility to sell the product against the competition.
Just my 2 cent worth.

Did some "spirited" driving today in the wet and the ESP does cut in quite a bit, especiallly when accellerating round roundabouts. It is very good at getting you round corners safely, but when trying to keep up with a convoy led by a Focus RS it had to go off  In the dry it is still VERY difficult to get it to kick in. As has been said beofre, the doesn't NEED ESP, but it is a great safety feature for if it all goes wrong.
