stuff is like harder plastacine, manipulate it between your fingers and shape to the surface a small circle piece will do, use a lube, I use just car wash otherwise it just sticks solid and won't glide across the surface, light pressure and move it along and back as you go, couple of glides and the clay will be brown or have brown like marks on it as it removes the surface contamination specs. Leaves a glass like finish.
Shouldn't do any damage if your surface is washed and clean and you turn it over regulary.
Am no expert ? anyone ?

by the way its painful to do it took me 2 hours to do my car top to bottom couple weeks ago my method is do it panel by panel.
+1 I did mine last week and it is a long process but it is best to do each panel at a time, as after you have sprayed the panel and worked the clay you have to remove the liquid with a microfibre cloth.
It is well worth doing it even if it's once a year and the results are fantastic, removes all paint containments which you can see and the ones you can't see.
Just go out to your car now and rub(  ) your hand across a panel of your car you shouldn't hear any noise but if it sounds like it's sandpaper then it's worth doing.
After you have clayed your car, polish it if needed then wax the car to seal the paintwork

the idea is to remove contaminants from the paint work and also if you have any scratches it will clear the mud and crap out of them to the point sometimes they just dissapear.
your meant to do this with paintwork treatment followed after so your standard rotary polisher should remove any scratches and your get immaculate paint work.
so clay bar physically removing any contaminants it creates a clean and perfect surface to treat, with in effect the clay is picking up this dirt and carrying it so actually rubbing away it does scratch the paintwork not harshly but it does to an extent but with your polish kit you can buffer out the scratches.
but without actually clay baring your car and then using a rotary polisher it's dangerous as you could get some grit in-between your polish and grind it into the paint work eventually after several polishes your just grind away the lacquer.

You can get maring from the clay. Big white streaks that have to be polished out. Also the risk of scratching is there if you don't fold the clay very often. To use clay work in small areas, I do 12"x12" at a time. Spray the lube/detailing spray and then rub the clay up and down. You don't need to put any pressure on it. Just hold it against the body work. Make sure you keep the area well lubed! You will hear the clay picking up the small particals of dirt. The pannel is cleaned when you can no longer hear the dirt and it's a nice constant sound. Keeping the clay warm will keep it supple and work better. Taking your time is key. Claying is the first stage of prep for the rest of the cleaning process. Much like when painting plastics. Spend plenty of time on prep and you will get better results.
I took 3 hours on my focus and it shows.

Once a year is plenty if your washing regularly. Make sure your clay is very soft and keep a spare piece in a bowl of hot water when the piece your using starts getting a bit harder. Try amd do it on a nice hot day. I marred my paint quite badly claying on a chilly morning. I was machine polishing after it but it was a bit of a scary experience!

Christ, takes me about 45 minutes to clay my car.
Meguiars is the best clay bar by far.
