I got this kit from ebay to clay my car for the first time, so i have nothing to compare it too, but i was impressed with it. I cut the clay into two, just in-case i dropped the clay on the floor.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/250993890567?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649

Made a real difference to the car

Megs clay bar is a great place to start.

I use sonus ultra fine clay now and not had any trouble with it.

Top tip with clay is to have a bowl of warm warter to dunk it in. Helps keep it nice and soft

Looks interesting Kenny.

yep I use warm water, still Megs is quite firm, 3M says for the pro/enthusiast with a medium cut, sounds a bit too severe.

Oh hey there =]
I don't know how I managed to miss this thread but I did lol. I know a little about detailing as previously stated (cheers Lee ) Ive used a couple of different clays, not many though I must admit. I like Bilt Hamber medium, it's easy to manipulate but not too soft and is very effective. You can buy it direct from BH for £10.95 which is a fair price for the bite it has. BH do a soft clay which is easier still to mould but has less bite, both are great though.
Autobrite Direct do a great range of clays too and they are highly rated although I haven't personally used them but I'd stick with the Bilt Hamber ones

am thinking of claying it this year, wasn't done last year, might do it sometime soon when I wash it, will wash it as normal then again and clay it as I go using some spray wash too. Try do this before summer then less to do when I do it's once a year five layers of all sorts of liquids................

sorry to ask a stupid question but how do you actually clay? and can it potentially be damaging?

stuff is like harder plastacine, manipulate it between your fingers and shape to the surface a small circle piece will do, use a lube, I use just car wash otherwise it just sticks solid and won't glide across the surface, light pressure and move it along and back as you go, couple of glides and the clay will be brown or have brown like marks on it as it removes the surface contamination specs. Leaves a glass like finish.
Shouldn't do any damage if your surface is washed and clean and you turn it over regulary.
Am no expert ? anyone ?

clay baring isn't completely innocent it does scratch the car but it should only be done 2-3 times a year at most. like steve said.

the idea is to remove contaminants from the paint work and also if you have any scratches it will clear the mud and crap out of them to the point sometimes they just dissapear.

your meant to do this with paintwork treatment followed after so your standard rotary polisher should remove any scratches and your get immaculate paint work.

so clay bar physically removing any contaminants it creates a clean and perfect surface to treat, with in effect the clay is picking up this dirt and carrying it so actually rubbing away it does scratch the paintwork not harshly but it does to an extent but with your polish kit you can buffer out the scratches.

but without actually clay baring your car and then using a rotary polisher it's dangerous as you could get some grit in-between your polish and grind it into the paint work eventually after several polishes your just grind away the lacquer.

by the way its painful to do it took me 2 hours to do my car top to bottom couple weeks ago my method is do it panel by panel.

+1 I did mine last week and it is a long process but it is best to do each panel at a time, as after you have sprayed the panel and worked the clay you have to remove the liquid with a microfibre cloth.

It is well worth doing it even if it's once a year and the results are fantastic, removes all paint containments which you can see and the ones you can't see.

Just go out to your car now and rub( ) your hand across a panel of your car you shouldn't hear any noise but if it sounds like it's sandpaper then it's worth doing.

After you have clayed your car, polish it if needed then wax the car to seal the paintwork

You can get maring from the clay. Big white streaks that have to be polished out. Also the risk of scratching is there if you don't fold the clay very often.
To use clay work in small areas, I do 12"x12" at a time. Spray the lube/detailing spray and then rub the clay up and down. You don't need to put any pressure on it. Just hold it against the body work. Make sure you keep the area well lubed!
You will hear the clay picking up the small particals of dirt. The pannel is cleaned when you can no longer hear the dirt and it's a nice constant sound.
Keeping the clay warm will keep it supple and work better.

Taking your time is key. Claying is the first stage of prep for the rest of the cleaning process. Much like when painting plastics. Spend plenty of time on prep and you will get better results.
I took 3 hours on my focus and it shows.

Got to agree with Micky the more time you spend on preparation, claying, polishing and waxing then you will achieve the best results

very good way of understanding how it works wash your car and run your hand gently accross the panel.

your hear like a rough sliding sound.

Clay bar that panel and do it again, you can't hear a thing.

Annoying thing if anyones noticed how after clay baring if you put the bottle or cloth on the surface it slips right off! always having to pick the bugger up.

Once a year is plenty if your washing regularly. Make sure your clay is very soft and keep a spare piece in a bowl of hot water when the piece your using starts getting a bit harder. Try amd do it on a nice hot day. I marred my paint quite badly claying on a chilly morning. I was machine polishing after it but it was a bit of a scary experience!

Christ, takes me about 45 minutes to clay my car.

Meguiars is the best clay bar by far.
