I'm getting a hissing noise from the front left of my car when under certain amounts of acceleration. I'd say the noise is most prominent when between 1500-2000 revs (this may well be to engine noise drowning it out aftre that).

The only thing I can find is that my K&N has quite a large dent in it, it may well need replacing as something has cracked the mesh on the underside. I never noticed this noise before recently..

The only thing I've done recenetly is removed the filter - cleaned, oiled and reinstalled it after cleaning the throttle body. Everything is tight and sealed from what I can tell. I didn't apply anything to the actual cone when attaching it to the pipe so don't know if some air is leaking or something. It sounds more like air escaping than air being sucked in.

The air con is not on so it's not that.

This may just be me hearing things and being a sissy boy.

power steering noise?
start the car take the lid off turn steering wheel a few times put lid back on see if its fixed!

get someone in your drivers seat and rev the car up the band (safely) and get your head under the bonnet to get an exact location of the hissing.

we could be talking about a leak in your manifold or a broken K&N or nothing to worry about but until you locate the exact place its coming from i wont be able to help.

the easiest solution rather then beating around the bush is take it to the garage mate if you can a specialist in Ford or a reputable garage.

Definitely not the power steering mate, all checked but thank you for the suggestion. Helps narrow it all down!

Right stason mate, had a friend rev up the engine when the car is sat and we simply can't get it to make the noise unless the car is rolling which makes it harder to locate. You hear it in 2nd-4th gear when between 1500-2000 revs under light acceleration. It disappears after 2k revs almost instantly. The noise never really goes up or down in volume just sounds the same all the time.

Very strange, I am more confused than before at this point.

I get paid Monday so will book it in at a specialist in Sheffield to try and diagnose it.

Just for extra info, I'm getting no lose of power, my idle is ~800 revs when the engine is warmed up and there's no poor tracking etc.

My brakes were taken apart etc and the brake fluid changed during my service (and I don't remember this noise before the MOT), is there a chance that one of the pads is catching on the disc so as the wheels start to accelerate more with the throttle I'm hearing the pad rub aggressively? I suppose you should be able to hear it more often though if that was the case..

Does it only make the noise under acceleration? Does the noise go away instantly if you take your foot off the pedal?

my guess would be your power steering unit, occasionally the unit will make a hissing sound when the fluid passes through valves and isn't uncommon.

whether that is a bad thing i don't know but worth taking it in for a check up or try changing the fluid with your mate and give it a drive around and see if it still does it.

would explain at low revs why you hear it hissing away

Yes, instantly stops. Mechanic mate things it's something sucking, says it's probably stopping at high revs because a higher volume of air is moving through it effectively sealing the gap temporarily under pressure. If that's the case gotta be something to do with the K&N or TB.

I'll check the fluid in the morning Stason cheers.

It still sounds like the common power steering air trapped did you try get the air out as above?!
What colour is your pas fuild?!

Yeah I made sure there's no trapped air mate, cherry red I do believe, checked not long ago.

Why would accelerating cause power steering to hiss?

I know this might sound stupid but is your window closed?
Now it's summer I've been driving around with the window down and when I'm on a narrow road it sounds like it's hissing but it's just the scenery passing by closer to the car made me worry for a minute yesterday
