Thanks Stason that helps. So say if I have a golf with the same engine in petrol and another as a diesel then the diesel would shift in gear more so than the petrol? I.e. On a country lane if I wanted to overtake I wouldn't have to drop a gear in a diesel?

So why doesn't everyone drive a diesel in that case? Because they sound like tractors? Haha

most diesels are the same as petrols now, i drove a 1.2 ecoboost diesel i noticed there was nothing more power wise above 3.5k rpm all the power was 2k-3k rpm.

it certainly shifted you can get up to speed but the gears are very short because the top rpm of the car was nothing at all.

compared to the petrol you have more free range around the rpm but takes twice as long to achieve the high rpm and acquired force to pull.

so yes a diesel will be better at picking up speed but has very short gears.

because it's very expensive to service in a short answer

Also with diesel the entire fuel range can be adjusted to give power in different places however the increased weight in the engine (from updating parts) would cause the engine to be very slow at reving, which makes it pretty pointless as to have power higher up.:.

There is a 306 on a mechanical fuel pump thats revving at 6k however the power at this high end must be very low or poor at driving at the bottom end
