Look, its never going to take off.

A plane would not take off if it did not have wings would it!

As the plane is not moving there is no air moving = no take off.

Anybody that disagrees is odd.

You should do a web search for it.
Even a forum of pilots said it would take off. The plane does move because the conveyor is going as fast as the wheels, not as fast as the plane.

Pilots don't know anything.

If you run on a treadmill do you feel the find in your face? Nope
If you put your ST on a rolling road and got to 90mph and stuck you head out the window, would it be windy? Nope

The place doesn't move, the wheels do but the place doesn't. Wings are designed to give lift and will only lift if the forward momentum of the place is sufficient to "push" the wings up.

Tell me who these pilots are as I will never fly on there planes. Losers.

All pilots are too annoyed to know there Arse from the elbows.

I agree with gareth and gr1340.... no lift.

Because the drive is going to the treadmill/rolling road.

In this instance it's not.

The drive is separate and external to that. It's the engines pushing the air, not driving the wheels.

The conveyor could just as easily be going in the opposite direction. The wheels just freewheel, they have no drive.

If the wheels move at the same speed as the conveyor, the wings get no air movement do they.

How does a place lift off the ground with no air movement to the wings?

Please answer that.

Ok but Kevin never said that the plane was rigged, so as i understand it when the planes engines begin to produce thrust, you can move the conveyor belt in the opposite direction as fast as you wish, the plane will still start advancing - if it manages to advance fast enough (in the relative sorrounding atmosphere) then the wings *will* begin to produce lift and eventually it will take off.

Oh yeah.

Agreed, the plane will take off if that situation.

HOWEVER, the original statement was:
A plane is standing on runway that can move (some sort of band conveyer). This conveyer has a control system that tracks the tire speed and tunes the speed of the conveyer to be exactly the same (but in opposite direction).

The question is:

Will the plane take off or not?

The answer is no if the engine isn't on.

I was just reading it carefully again and in fact I think the thing about the "conveyor" and the "system that tracks" thingy is just there to confuse everything. All that needs to be considered is the plane and its airspeed. Consider the initial situation... the plane is sitting on the conveyor or whatever you want to call it and standing still. The wheels are not rotating so the conveyor belt is still too. So for the conveyor to start moving - it moves in the direction opposite to the motion of the plane at the same rate as the wheels are turning - the wheels have to begin turning. When the wheels begin turning the conveyor will start moving and the wheels are going to start turning faster... in turn this should make the belt run faster too... argh I'm loosing it !!!
