I know a few people are keen to go or are going, as I've been to the Nurburgring twice I though I'd make a post dedicated to the Ring with bits of info that I've picked up. Hopefully this will help others who want to go.
The Ring is such an easy trip to do I'm seriously surprised that more people I know haven't gone.

Before you go

If you're planning on going I seriously recommend you get hold of racing game that has the Nurburgring on it and do as many laps on it as you can. The track is about 13 miles long and a few of the corners will quite easily catch you out if you don't know what to expect. They'll never be exactly the same but you'll get a very good picture of what each corner is like.

You need to make sure:
 • You book a hotel
 • You take out European Brake Down Cover
 • Your car insurance covers you for driving in Europe. (You need to be 18 to drive in Germany with a UK license) and add anyone else that will share the driving. This policy will not cover you when on track.
 • You book a method of crossing the Channel. I've used the Eurotunnel twice and it's completely painless but you could always use the ferry
 • Buy a European Travel kit. You need a Reflective Jacket per person, warning triangle, breathalisers (I think per person...), Spare bulb kit, First aid kit, GB sticker/magnet if your number plate doesn't have one on it, headlight converters

That seems like a big kit list buy you can buy them complete. I got mine from Halfords, I just needed to get an extra hi vis jacket and the breathalisers.
You also need paperwork
 • Both parts of your driving license for each driver
 • Proof of car insurance
 • The cars' V5C
 • Any hotel/ferry/train booking confirmation emails
 • Passports
 • Have a look on the AA's website
This list may change so double check before going.
I'd also recommend having a Sat Nav with European maps. I love mine and it works perfectly but maps work too.

Other things I think are worth taking:
 • Engine Oil
 • Lots of water for the engine. I took 5L incase it broke and I needed to top it up again. I filled up a used bottle of Screen wash
 • Basic tool kit, you'll never know if you'll need it
 • I also took duck tape and cling film. It sounds stupid but I managed to bodge a repair to a coolant pipe using these two things so they're worth taking imo
 • Kitchen roll, helps if you want to check the oil or if you make a mess snacking on the way
 • Old towel. Just in case...

I go food shopping before I leave too. Buying lots of water and bits of snack food will keep costs down considerably.
Remember that it's a long way to go and when you get there you'll abuse the car and you still have to drive back so prep the car before you leave. Make sure things like brakes and tires are ok, oil is topped up etc.

On The Way
I love an early morning so I always book an early channel crossing. This means that I get to the Ring about mid afternoon and have a bit of time to relax and go see what is going on.
Remember to drive on the wrong side of the road! For the first few hours it's not too bad as it's all motorway and you soon get used overtaking, but the last bit of the journey is all much tighter roads. Approach junctions slowly and look LEFT first, not right! Roundabouts mess with my head too, you obviously go the opposite way round but it does feel weird for a while

At the Nurburgring
 • Make sure that your tyre pressures are ok and the car is in decent condition. As I said before, you'll be driving the car pretty hard for about 13 miles so it's worth taking a minute or two to check tyres and oil.
 • The track is surprisingly quiet when it first opens compared to lunch time, IMO it is so worth getting up that little bit earlier to make the most of a quiet track
 • You need to go and purchase laps from a very small building right next to the barriers. You can buy varying amounts. The more you buy the cheaper it is per lap. A single lap costs 26 Euros, 4 laps costs 95 etc
 • When going round, make sure your driving is smooth, deliberate and that you are aware of what is behind you. Sudden moves or harsh braking in corners will unsettle the car which could be dangerous
 • Pick your line through the corners and stick to it. If people catch you up it's their job to pass you safely. Any attempt to get out of their way mid corner could end badly
 • People will catch you up at stupidly quick speeds, make sure you are extremely aware of what is behind you and where the track is going. As people catch you up, indicate right and move over to the right side of the track and let them pass. This is what is supposed to happen but be aware that some people just pass where ever there is a gap
 • IMO, don't time your lap. You will only encourage yourself to push harder and you may push beyond the limits of your car or driving skill

I think I've covered most of it. If anyone has any questions then please ask and I'll add it into the original post

good plan duncan, just one thing to note that I'm sure certain countries on the way eg france dont allow speed camera notificatons/detections on sat navs or road angels etc..
something worth checking?
there are also companies that can isure you for track days but you need to make sure they cover it for The Ring and just to be aware it probably only insures you and your car, not anyone elses or the track.

From what I've read on the internet, you are correct in saying that your sat nav knowing the location of speed cameras in France or having a device that can detect them is illegal, but a sat nav can give you the rough location. An update of the device and European maps should bring it up to date with the new laws.

I've never looked into track insurance, something people might want to consider before going.

in france sat navs have to be able to turn the cameras off, if you cant deactivate it you cant even travel with it in the car or they can fine you the maximum speeding fine they have as they see it you are only using it so you can speed

I actually found this with my Origin B2 in 2008. Luckily Spain was re-activated

Fantastic guide Duncan! Really helpful My list was a little longer than that when i drove to Kefalonia but you've covered everything you would need getting to Germany and back.

I got one for when I've driven in Europe in the past. There's not too expensive, I think mine was about £15, and you only need to get a small one, car ones aren't massive like the ones you have at work.

has anyone seen the new rules if not then

◦Bucket seats with ‘ears’ (as the Germans delightfully refer to them) are not allowed. Those are the seats with wrap-around head restraints.
◦The famous Hans device neck-restraint is also banned from public driving.
◦Roll cages with doorbars that restrict access are banned.
◦Roll cages must be padded. Not with proper FIA crash-absorbing materials. Nobody will check that. Just any old foam will do.
◦Aftermarket snap-off steering wheels are also verboten.

Road legal race cars no longer welcome
It sounds bad, but there’s already a bunch of banning reasons you won’t find written down anywhere, stuff like wings made of aluminium (except for Porsche 997 GT3 RS Mk2s), rotary-release harness clasps (except for those on Porsches) and any wings or canards that protrude beyond the width of the body (except for those on the Porsche GT3.RS 4.0). Obviously these rules are there to try and keep the race cars out of the public traffic, and there’s an official notice period on the enforcement of them until April 30 allegedly...

250 euros drifting penalty
Yes, they’ve put it in writing at last. No drifting. And they’re even backing up all of these rules with a 250 euros fine that you’re supposed to have agreed to pay simply by reading the contract and driving the track. Much like we all read the End User License Agreement on every new piece of software we install or phone that we buy.

Which country is Porsche from, and where's the Nurburgring again?

Indeed. I'm getting the gearbox oil changed on Sat so hoping this resolves the 2nd gear synchromesh issue i'm currently having. I also need a few other bits doing. If all thumbs up then the Nurburgring will be having a flying Clio Sport taking it on

With Silverstone reducing the track I won't be getting the clio out of storage and seems silly to insure & tax for 1 month. I'm going to skip the ring this year with the baby due in April and funds being stretched while Sarah's on maternity. I shall still be getting the Clio preped for this though so 2014 ill have it set as a true track weapon. I'm a little angry at fordfair/Trax changing to the national track. Thought I'd shout now.

Hoping to Alex. Using the Shogun to trailer it. That way I don't have to be stuck for space with all Maiya's stuff and comfort. It all depends on this rebuild (fingers crossed).

Kenny, Duff & Chris C are also going in Oct so it will be an FFST Trip.

Good idea that, i always thought that was the best way to get a car there That way if the tyres and fluids are knackered it just goes on the trailer and you dont have to worry about it till you home

I can enjoy it a little bit more knowing it only has to do the length of the ring and then back on a trailer... not having to worry about limping it home.

Time will tell.

No one does that passed after 1997 unless they took the test. I'm waiting on news about my Shogun and then i'm going to get a Trailer licence

Time will tell.

i have looked into getting a trailer for the mondeo.

i can tow up to 750kg on my standard lisence, but if the trailer weighs more than 750kg your ok if the combined weight of the car and trailer is under 3500kg your ok

so the mondeo being 1500kg, the fiesta being 1100kg and the trailer weighing 500kg max, its under the limit

You also have to take into account people, luggage and extra wheels etc you have. All adds weight.

They can take you to a weighbridge, I have seen it happen.

I thought the ruling for people who have a recent license can only drive a combined weight of 3500Kgs but a trailer must not weigh more than 750Kgs?

Dan - I wouldn't fancy towing 1600Kgs with a 1500Kg car lol

You will find the mondeo is closer to 2tonnes, pretty sure its not the weight of the vehicle but the max weight of the vehicle that applies

If you passed your test after January 1, 1997 and before the January 19, 2013 you are able to drive a vehicle that weighs up to 3,500kg towing a trailer of up to 750kg, bringing total weight allowed to 4,250kg. You may also tow a trailer over 750kg as long as the weight of the trailer is no more than the unladen weight of the towing vehicle, up to a combined weight of 3,500kg.

The combination doesn't work your fiesta plus trailer needs to weigh less than the empty mondeo

Finding stuff comflicting this though, would probably need to make a phone call to find out the exact rules

Hi all! Thank you, we did have a fantastic time, even on a budget! I know it gets mentioned every so often, but would love to go on a forum visit. Two of us did it on £700, which included Lee having a Senna racing jacket and us driving eight laps!

That's a fantastic price Steph happy

People could always jump in with others and help with fuel if they wanted to go.

I shall be there. Next year the Clio will be sorted for track but it's going to be a toss up about being able to get to the ring or not.

Petrol is single biggest cost. Me and my mates make a tour out of it so we stop at several places nornally and have a couple nights out but obviously you can cut that out and just go straight to the ring and back to save money.

I would put it in this order:

Petrol £250
Laptime (9 laps) £165
Accommodation £140
Euro tunnel £110
Breakdown cover £50
Food (depends on eating in/out/quantity)

Thats roughly what I spend when going in total for 2 people.

also if you collect tesco points you can treble what you have and get money off the train crossing, we paid £15 for our crossing last year and £35 this year

The 328 only has two seats now though lol To be fair, accommodation can still be cut down, thouse houses work out pretty good value for money when there are 4 of you!

Well essentially it cost me £605 as Lee's jacket was £95...

Any trip abroad using our cars will be expensive, that fact cannot be ignored! We spent 200 Euros for 8 laps, £158 on accommodation, over £100 for the Euro Tunnel (which was booked well in advance)... The list goes on. We did eat out twice, although chose cheaper options, and visited the museum.

Considering most people spend about £800+, I think we did very well.

It really is what you make it. I will always try and keep the costs down where possible. The larger the group, the better the savings potentially. Dan did indeed alert me to the Tesco Clubcard savings, which is now why we have converted to Tesco from Asda!!!

its very similar to what it cost me and Thomas to come over to the UK everytime

Accomodation - Usually around £100
Fuel - At least 3 tanks @£70 each so £210
Ferry/Chunnel - about £100 (Ferry is usually cheaper than the tunnel)
Food/eating out
Show tickets

I never bothered with breakdown recovery, didnt even have that in NL and of course the cost of the laps is not there but it was easily £500 minimum each time
