My chief at work own a MK 2 golf GTI convertible and say even is car less power than mine (112 BHP) he could be me on a straight line because is car is lighter . I told him is no way is cab can beat an ST! He doesn't believe me!

Did they do a MK2 soft top GTi?
I think it would be close but I would fancy the ST, the golf would be nearly 20 years old!

The early Golf GTI's are legendary for their speed & handling (given their age). IMO it WOULD beat the (but only just)

The following quote is taken from >>HERE<<

Quote:

The Golf GTi has been piling on the pounds over the last few decades. The Mk4 Golf is a whopping 48 percent heavier than the original Mk1. All this means that the later cars need much more power just to stay in the same league as the originals. Despite its 20 valves, turbo and modern electronic engine management, the Mk4 GTi 1.8 Turbo can't match even the earliest humble 1.6 GTi in terms of power to weight ratio. To have the same power to weight ratio as that early car, the modern Mk4 would need 162 bhp, to catch the Mk2 16v, a whopping 180bhp! With such little mass to haul about, it goes without saying that these early Golfs can change direction with a nimbleness thats absent from anything but lightweight sports cars of today such as the Lotus Elise. Grip is strong, handling superb and some even say the replacement Mark III was much the inferior car for the enthusiast driver.

The Mk II GTi 16v is still a rapid car even by todays standards. With a top speed of 129mph and a sprint to 60mph in just 7.3 seconds itll show many of todays hot hatches its cleanly styled rump.

The Mk2 Cabrio would be in fact an Mk3 and because it's a cabrio there's no way it's lighter than the ST. Additionally the ST's traction might not be one of it's best features but a Golf Cabrio's is WORSE ! ha ha! Early Golf GTI's are legendary for their performance that's true, and it's mainly due to the low weight, but Golf Cabrios (and that includes all of them) are legendary for their poor handling. I worked for 7 years in a VW dealership and drove many different Cab Golfs (new, second hand, etc) they were all crappy!

The cabrios were heavy, underpowered and their handling was compromised.

IMHO no contest. The would blow it away!

I don't think even an Mk2 GTI 16V (hard roof) would beat the ST as it was slower than my 16V Clio which has Identical performance to the ST. The Mk3 16V was even slower due to the added weight. As for the Mk1 it did not exist in 16V (only 8V 112 bhp) so similar to a Mk 3 Cab. In other words thay are all slower than your ST - for anything faster you'd have to go for a VR6.

OK just thinking about it, maybe a G60 might be as quick (the 2WD, not the Rally) provided it's well driven but the gear changing on the G60 was VW's first attempt at using cables vs. rods in the shifting and it was extremely cumbersome and slow resulting in a 16V (which used rods) being faster despite having 22 bhp less and weighing about the same.

But what a waste of power, think what could be done with 240 ? bhp in a lighter shell... I think it is on the higher side of 1500 kg...

Absolutely couldn't agree more crofty!!!

You don't go around racing Rs Turbos in a tiny hatback like a R32. I think there well anoying, sure there fast, but there a small car and small cars tend to be a boys car, yet boys can't get insured on them.

Moroll of the story is; Don't be a boy and get a R32, be a man get an Evo!
