Hi everyone

Well today I decided it was time to finally fit the 280mm ST170 brakes that i've been meaning to fit for ages. I've fit brand new HEL stainless hoses, Pagid discs and pads, splash plates, new dot4 pagid fluid (for the time being) and painted the hub, new caliper carriers and existing calipers in hammerite yellow.

No pictures with the wheels back on yet, but here we go:

Yeah, I noticed this morning early on so PM'd chris to ask him to move it.

Gary, yeah i've been driving all day, we've done about 120 miles with them on now and they seem fine. Not sure if the difference is massive yet but the pedal feels a bit nicer (probably due to the fluid) and the car is generally smoother and less grindy because of the state of the old pads and discs.

I was surprised to find that one of the caliper carrier slider pins was seized absolutely solid. Water must have got in and rusted it, I was banging it with a big hammer and twisting it with the spanner but I could barely move it. The ST170 carriers are obviously silky smooth though thanks to a very good clean and new grease.

great mod this is! you'll notice under heavy braking it makes the rear more planted as it brakes the same if not harder than the fronts stopping that light feeling

Yeah Dan, i'm looking forward to getting heavier on the brakes as they get bedded in. At the moment i'm just giving them a few hundred miles of light braking just to be sure nothing is wrong and that I don't wreck them.

Sometimes when I roll up to traffic lights very slowly (2-3mph) i'll pull the handbrake to stop me the last tiny bit for some reason (habit I guess). Before the car used to "grind" to a halt literally. Did it today and the car pretty much stopped dead. Much better!

Sounds like a good mod. Where did you get them from?

looks good mate id like to do these at some point, just sourcing the parts proved an issue when i had the front ones changed

Gary, I bought the carriers about two years ago off someone who was breaking their ST170 on ebay. Nobody would sell me just the carriers (understandably) so I ended up buying the calipers too. He was supposed to send me the splash shields but they never showed up. Because the calipers are the same as the ones we already have I haven't swapped them meaning that I have a spare pair of rear calipers now. I did however remove my calipers completely so that I could do a really neat job of cleaning it up, greasing various parts and painting it all (and because I was changing the lines anyway so might as well).

The splash shields I bought brand new from PartsBox. I was very surprised that they arn't actually any larger diameter than the standard ones, they are just a bit shallower. I bet I could easily modify the standard ones to work (just trim about half an inch or so off the edge of the shield). The pads and discs I bought from EuroCarParts.

I used Cera Tec on the back of the pads which is Pagid's own metal-free grease. It is only £2.70 or so normally and is supposed to last longer than copper grease. I won some in a ECP competition a while back along with the Pagid brake fluid which is why I used that.
