I passed my MOT with a reflective vinyl plate on the bonnet! I should imaging a vinyl reflective one off to the side shouldn't be an issue.

If you do end up going for a self adhesive vinyl plate make sure it's properly reflective - most on ebay aren't, but the reflective ones are fully road legal.
