Thanks for that. How much does a re-map cost

Depends who you go with. Personally I think the best option around at the moment is using dreamscience's new advantage 3 software. Dealers that use it include jamsport, collins, and pumabuild. Its £500 for the unit but this will actually give you 3 different tunes (Say one for standard ST running 99RON, one for an ST with Induction and exhaust modified, and one for just exhaust, these depend on the dealer). Alternatively you can get 3 totally custom maps for your car, which is obviously the best, I don't know how much extra this is as it will involve at least a couple of rolling road sessions I imagine. Your other options are Bluefin, availiable from pumaspeed, at about £325 I think, its only 1 map you get with them, and I have heard a fair bit of naff about them. There is also unichip, but I don't know much about them.

Sorry to be away so long (been revising for a Cisco exam), I have a related question, i find that the maximum rate of acceleration is about 4500 to 5000 rpm (hence my statement about the Fiesta not being sporty!) most of the kits that give the extra 20 bhp do they course the car to accelerate faster further up the rev band ? Also the Focus ST170 uses the same engine but with 170 bhp what’s the difference, anyone know?
PS my next door neighbour has both a Golf GTI MK 1 and 3 we will be testing soon !
Promise to get back in touch sooner! Best to you all Dave

Sorry its only half nine and I havent slept well so excuse me if I'm wrong (which is frequently *lol*) but the ST170 doesnt use the same engine as the Fiesta ST. The ST170 engine is a VVT engine as Daz here says which the Fiesta's engine aint.

The Focus ST170 engine is a Zetec-E engine, the same one used in all Focus Mk1 1.8 and 2.0 guises. It was tuned by the american SVT dept (the equivilent to our old SVE,now Team RS dept.) and adapted for Europe use in the ST170 It has a cast iron block and an aluminium head. The Focus RS uses a further version of this engine.
The engine used in the Fiesta ST is infact a Mazda engine called Duratec HE by Ford but it's real name is Mazda I-4. Confusing as the DOHC Pinto engine replacement used in the Sierra/Transit/Galaxy/Scorpio/EscortRS2000 16v was also called I-4?? It is an all aluminium design and was first used in the current Mondeo in 2001 in 1.8 and 2.0 guises. It is also used in the Mazda 3/5/6 & MX-5 and the new Focus/C-Max/S-Max and Galaxy. If Ford would learn to get it to run right, it is actually a very very good engine. Drive a Mazda version and you'll see the difference.
