The ECU has a number of preset programs if you like, and it will choose the best performing of these for the situation. So say you are running in hot weather with 91RON fuel, it will choose a more 'conservative' program. Obviously if you are here in nice and cool england and running 99RON V-Power you'll be running an ECU preset giving you better performance. When you add some breather mods to the engine the ECU will select the best program possible. But because all the programs were loaded onto the ECU with the standard set up in mind its not a perfect solution. Hence the custom map will really be able to release the power potential of your mods.

Thanks for that.
How much does a re-map cost

Depends who you go with. Personally I think the best option around at the moment is using dreamscience's new advantage 3 software. Dealers that use it include jamsport, collins, and pumabuild. Its £500 for the unit but this will actually give you 3 different tunes (Say one for standard ST running 99RON, one for an ST with Induction and exhaust modified, and one for just exhaust, these depend on the dealer). Alternatively you can get 3 totally custom maps for your car, which is obviously the best, I don't know how much extra this is as it will involve at least a couple of rolling road sessions I imagine.
Your other options are Bluefin, availiable from pumaspeed, at about £325 I think, its only 1 map you get with them, and I have heard a fair bit of naff about them. There is also unichip, but I don't know much about them.

Sorry to be away so long (been revising for a Cisco exam), I have a related question, i find that the maximum rate of acceleration is about 4500 to 5000 rpm (hence my statement about the Fiesta not being sporty!) most of the kits that give the extra 20 bhp do they course the car to accelerate faster further up the rev band ?
Also the Focus ST170 uses the same engine but with 170 bhp what’s the difference, anyone know?

PS my next door neighbour has both a Golf GTI MK 1 and 3 we will be testing soon !

Promise to get back in touch sooner! Best to you all Dave

The 170PS 2.0-litre Duratec ST engine has been developed from the standard 130PS 2.0-litre Ford Focus engine with several new features, including:

New, high-flow aluminium cylinder head with larger inlet valves and higher lift intake and exhaust camshafts for higher peak rpm levels
Continuously variable intake valve timing
High compression, cast-aluminium pistons and forged steel connecting rods
Dual mass flywheel
New dual state intake (DSI) manifold, using long runners for low-end torque and shorter runners for higher peak power outputs
Larger bore free-flowing stainless steel exhaust system, tuned for enhanced performance sound.
A new, high-flow aluminium cylinder head with enlarged inlet ports, larger inlet valves and higher lift intake and exhaust camshafts for higher peak rpm levels
Continuously variable intake valve timing
A new dual-stage intake (DSI) manifold that uses long runners for low-end torque and shorter runners at higher revs for better peak power output
A 65 mm large-bore, stainless steel tubular exhaust system with less restrictive catalytic converters

Sorry its only half nine and I havent slept well so excuse me if I'm wrong (which is frequently *lol*) but the ST170 doesnt use the same engine as the Fiesta ST. The ST170 engine is a VVT engine as Daz here says which the Fiesta's engine aint.

The Focus ST170 engine is a Zetec-E engine, the same one used in all Focus Mk1 1.8 and 2.0 guises.
It was tuned by the american SVT dept (the equivilent to our old SVE,now Team RS dept.) and adapted for Europe use in the ST170
It has a cast iron block and an aluminium head.
The Focus RS uses a further version of this engine.

The engine used in the Fiesta ST is infact a Mazda engine called Duratec HE by Ford but it's real name is Mazda I-4. Confusing as the DOHC Pinto engine replacement used in the Sierra/Transit/Galaxy/Scorpio/EscortRS2000 16v was also called I-4??
It is an all aluminium design and was first used in the current Mondeo in 2001 in 1.8 and 2.0 guises. It is also used in the Mazda 3/5/6 & MX-5 and the new Focus/C-Max/S-Max and Galaxy.
If Ford would learn to get it to run right, it is actually a very very good engine.
Drive a Mazda version and you'll see the difference.
